  1. I'm really looking for a good upscaling s/vcd compatablty dvd player. I dont want anything rediculously expensive as I'm obviously still watching vcds and not full of money. Does anyone know any decent player with hdmi that plays s/vcd that I can just go into a local walmart and buy for reasonable price?

I would recommend a Philips player, but not the DVP-642. I own this model and it works OK for me, but lots of people have had problems with it. louv68's recommendation is probably good.

Do note that Philips players do support VCD and SVCD, but SVCD support could be better. This is how my player is - all Philips players are likely the same. My player will only play the first audio track on an SVCD (the format supports up to 2 separate switchable audio tracks) and if there are any subs on an SVCD (the format supports at least 4 selectable ones), the player will play the first one and they cannot be turned off

They are generally OK for VCD playback. Press the Audio button on your remote control to change between "Left Vocal/Right Vocal/Left mono/Right mono" if necessary on VCD. Note that you will have to push the Menu button to turn off PBC on VCD if you want to jump to specific times on the VCD. With PBC active, you will not be allowed to time jump.

Some Philips players support Divx playback too, which is nice. Packed bit stream (and a few other things) are sometimes problems for Philips players, so keep that in mind. Resolutions greater than 720x576 will NOT be supported for Divx playback.
