Hello I was just wondering what codecs are required for a new install of XP to watch downloaded avi files? I tried to play one but could only get audio, so I downloaded and installed the divx and xvid codecs but now I can't hear the clip either. I don't want to install a bunch of codecs that I might not need.

G-spot or Media infor will tell you what you need.

If you are just watching then you might consider VLC or the KM Player, which can play back most formats, including DVD, without needing extra codecs installed.

Installing Xvid or Divx codecs will not affect audio, so you have other issues on that front.

Maybe you need to install the LAME MP3 ACM codec or the AC-3 FILTER etc.

Most DivX and XviD AVI files have either MP3 or AC-3 audio.

Gspot or videoinspector will tell which codecs the video and audio are used.and you can d/l just them or you could use VLC and it might play them. There are other players that are great too.

Some free software I have been using for a very long time might help you out, and also removes a lot of unwanted and unneeded bloated software from your system, if you have already installed it

If you just want to play audio or video then these are perfect as they do exactly what you want, and will play virtually anything that you download from the 'net

    RealPlayer Alternative
    QuickTime Alternative
    xvid codecs
    divx codecs
    The KMPlayer

I have just started using The KMPlayer instead of MediaPlayerClassic, this is also free and will play virtually any video or audio format so far, and I keep my codecs installations to an absolute minimum to avoid any confusion between codecs fighting over who can play what

xvid can also decode divx which are the two main codecs using in AVI's downloaded from the 'net

MediaPlayerClassic and The KMPlayer will also play DVDs with full menus and navigation without having to use bloated and slow MediaPlayer, they do just want you wnat without all the extra visuals

All of these are updated pretty frequently, especially RealPlayer and QuckTime alternatives when the companies update their codecs

All this is 100% freeware, no trial periods, no nag screens, do just what they say. They play and they work
