I am converting a bunch of VHS tapes to digital format (JV SV45US->Canopus 110->PC) and have been using AviSynth and VirtualDub for my restorations. It has been going pretty well except when color correction is involved. I have read up on luma, chroma, the different color spaces, etc but when looking at examples I can rarely see what a given filter is correcting.

That said, I am pretty good at reading histograms and such. Are there any good applications that can show me in a chart or graph what is missing color-wise from video? I saw a tool that looked like a radar screen but can't seem to find it again.

Are there any other options besides waking my wife up at 3am and asking if Jim looks blue?

The file you want is a virtualdub filter called Color Tools by Trevlac. If all has gone well it is attached to this post , and just needs to be put in your virtualdub plugins folder. It runs like any other filter, except that when you turn it on it covers the entire output screen, so you cannot see the graphs and your images together. Not quite as friendly as the same tools in Vegas, but better than not having them.
