I am curious if anyone know why the new Blu-Ray of Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest looks so crystal clear and life like when the other Blu-Ray of PotC: Curse of the Black Pearl looks great but its not life like...It is similar to DVD but at a higher resolution 1080P.

What is the difference with Dead Man's Chest that makes it so life like even though the back of the blu-ray box shows the same specs as all other blu-ray discs...ie: 1080P, 7.1 CH Dolby Digital, etc etc.

Is it the way the movie was originally recorded? Special HD camera used? if anyone knows please help me figure it out...if this is the new "technology" in video that blu-ray is heading toward then it may be worth it to get on the HDTV + Blu-Ray/HD DVD train.

  2. Most likely the film was filmed on film (grain and all) and the game was done HD.

Sorry if my post wasn't clear... I don't mean the game... If you go to a BestBuy store that demos Blu-Ray on a 1080P HDTV, you will see the life like picture. What sparked my curiosity is that all the blu-ray are 1080P but why is this one movie looks so life like.

Hiddefdigest rates both POC BR discs very high. I suspect whichever setup you watched POC Black Pearl at BestBuy on wasn't set up properly.

I've been to this forum and found both blu-ray to have high ratings, which is even more confusing... both demo had HDMI connection to a 1080P HDTV, different Brand but I don't think that is the reason.

If you have seen Dead Man's Chest demo and any other blu-ray movie demo, you will see the big difference between the two... I mean its absolutely life like while other blu-ray seems like a normal movie experience. I don't mean that the normal blu-ray isn't high quality picture but it doesn't make you feel like you are there in the movie life like.

I'm still perplexed by this one movie, I suggest everyone in this forum to watch it for themselves to have an understanding of what I am getting at. It is NOTHING like previous blu-ray movies that I have seen.

I still suspect that could be the issue, it's really hard to compare movies/discs accurately if the equipment is different.

I checked it myself, HDMI cable on both HDTV....besides if you see the life like video then you will know what I am so curious about. No other blu-ray movie comes close to matching this realism. I also have a PS3 HDMI connection, bought the movie "300" ... also disappointing since its not much of a new experience like it is with Dead Man's Chest.

Still lets assume it is not HDMI connection, how is there such a big difference between HDMI and component. Anyway do you know what I'm referring to when I say life like realism of this movie? have you seen it?

Lot's of people describe it as a 3D look, and while I haven't seen either POC on BR, I do know what you mean. So I'm following you correctly, they had the same connection, same make & model of BR player, and same make and model of HD TV (the comparisons between the 2 POC)? If any one of the above is different ie different make/model of TV, you can't make an accurate comparison betweeen the 2.

It could be the demo was tweaked to look good in a store with box default HDTV setups (which are always wrong for home). HDTVs are shipped with defaults set over contrasty and over bright because that is what grabs John Q public.

I'm not sure whether those minor changes can make something so life like...lets say I do accept this explanation, how do you explain other blu-ray movies that doesn't have this "3D" life like realism? movies like Underworld Revolution, A Few Good Men, 300, etc... Why did they not showcase this type of 3D realism before to boost Blu-ray's quality over DVD or HD DVD?

Can you link the clip online? Maybe it was rendered 3D.

I wish I could provide you with a comparison image, but I can't find any online... I highly recommend you go to your local electronics store that demos Dead Man's Chest on an HDTV to see with your own eyes... Its not that its 3D but its more like the realism, so real that you can tell everything is staged, even the water drops doesn't look natural as if its falling from a sprinkler.... not what you normally see from a top class movie or anywhere near what I saw from the original movie in theatre.

Most of the demos you see in the store are rigged to show a typical HDTV to advantage. They avoid the moves that cause edges to pixelate or horizons to show blocking. Try to find a store that shows SD ESPN and Discovery HD if you want a dose of reality.

Thx for the info, but I'm not referring to those, I am aware of the demos and what HDTV can display etc etc... BUT what sparked my curiosity is just this one PoC Dead Man's Chest movie experience, it seems to be going into a different direction and I would like to know if anyone can tell me why its different. Anyone can set up their home to look like the demo in the electronic store with the right equipment, so that is not what i'm concerned about.

I am more concerned about this new movie experience and whether it will be more dominant in later releases of blu-ray, if it is then it may be worth the investment because there is an obvious difference in the way it looks. I will try to look for examples online.
