Ok, at the moment, there is a thread going on about films. Whilst films are okay and all, personally, I would much rather read a book than watch the latest Star Wars. This isnt about The Book vs The Film of the Book, I mean books in general. (Even though Anthony Burgess's "A Clockwork Orange" does crap all over Kubrick's film: The whole moral of the story is rather lost (read: ignored) in the film, nice directing though... )
For example, would you rather read a literary masterpeice like Orwell's "Nineteen Eighty Four", or watch some eye candy like "Star Wars"?
Say what your favorite book or film is, if you feel like it. Or perhaps your favorite author or director.
Scorsese is my favorite director, I don't really have a favorite author. Although Dickens, Huxley, Orwell and Tolstoy stick out in my mind.

  2. I would rather watch star wars then read a book.I mean a good book is alright and all but i love the visuals on movies episode 1 may or may not have been a good story line to you but the visuals were a pure master piece.

  3. When it comes to books vs films, Star Wars is sort of an exception. It has been "the film" of special effects, and is generally expected to raise the bar. When it comes to books in general, I prefer them to films. I have yet to see a decent film made that can portray the way that books portray the characters. Also, films focus too much on the special effects and merchandicing, then on actually telling the story. With books, there's not time limit, there's no "star power", there's no million-dollar special effects that are used to sell it, so it relies on the story and how it is told - the way it should be.

  5. he he...I'm gonna give my media theorists opinion

I'd generally prefer the "idea" of reading a book since authorship is easier to distinguish. You know with the movie the old saying "too many cooks can spoil the broth".

Its also easy to denegrate film since its short history sees it as borrowing heavily from literary sources and thus less worthy in its cultural identity. In essense it carries the stigma of being of low cultural worth. Cue the 21st century and it may just become the the most important medium of communication. More and more people are acquiring video cameras and the historical relationship between producers and their audiences will see greater cultural conflicts over textual posession and the ability of those to create and define meanings. What the hell does this all mean ?????

Probably that I've had one too many beers and need to get some sleep.... evening all

well actually both are equal to me. In this sense, I am one that enjoys reading books that increase knowledge and etc, such as I'm currently reading to my kids "Albert Einstein, Ideas And Opinions". I have books on religious philosophy, martial arts, computers, finance, and etc. I enjoy reading these types of books. I on the other hand don't care much for novels and fiction, in fact looking at the books that are mine, we won't count my wife's given she reads all those romance thingies, my novel type stuff would be:
    "monkey" translated by arthur waley
    "the stand" by stephen king,
    "lost adventures of sherlock holmes",
"the death and life of superman",
    "celestine prophecy".
I'd actually like to get some more sherlock holmes books, one of the few fiction characters that I can really get into and not put down.
I on the other hand have a little over 150 dvds.
I thoroughly enjoy movies. Books and film are two different forms of entertainment to me. both give me joy and satisfaction but in different ways.

did that make any sense at all? LOL.

oh and d4n13l, how have you been doing?

I am okay, thanks for asking, and how are you?
Are The Kids taking General Relativity well? I know it took me like three 'reads' to comprehend it - They say that if you say that you understand it, then you probably don't(!). But after reading A Brief History of Time it became a bit clearer for me.
So, you put Books and Films on an equal footing, mkay, but I hope you voted for Books damnit!
Films will never come close to Books, in my opinion: Books are knowledge, Films are entertainment. No film will come close to making you question the very fabric of our society such as reading Nietzsche will. Even the most powerful film will appear superficial compared to a powerful book. The more books I read, the more disillusioned with films I become. I should actually be saying "mainstream" films, as it is these that I gripe about mostly. To be fair there are some really great films out there in the sea of consumer friendly trite, it's just a shame that they never get much airtime. However, I still enjoy films like Fast and Furious et cetera, it's just that I would rather be both entertained AND enlightend at the same time.

Books? Ewwwwww. I find books to be so boring, almost as boring as waiting for Windows ME to load. I'd much rather watch than read.
