    Hi,
I recently tried to play a blackmarket pirated DVD which I borrowed from someone on my computer. It couldn't play, so I decided that it probably was only formatted to play on normal DVD players - which work. However, when I try to play "legal" DVDs on my computer, they won't play either. When I try to play it in Windows Media, the program recognises the DVD and the names of the chapters do pop up but a window pops up saying that I have to change my Display Settings to a lower resolution, which I had tried but it didn't work. Then I tried to play it in RealPlayer, and a message pops up saying that the 'key exchange for DVD copyright protection failed". Is this fixable or do I need to get a new DVD drive?

Whatever is going on, this is NOT a hardware problem, so buying a new DVD drive will be a waste of money. RealPlayer and WMP are really not the best choice for DVD playback. I can't rule out that your problem is just that they are flaking out on you. Try VLC and if that fails, I'd advise scanning your PC with some kind of anti-virus program. AVG is a very good one and it's free.

And if your pirated crap installed some sort of software that screwed up playback then you could have all sorts of problems.

Use System Restore to roll back to a date before you played this crap disc and see if it rights things. Then upgrade to SP2, as it fills a lot of security holes and lets you continue to fill them with updates. Otherwise this will simply happen again.

And then go and kick your 'friend' in the nuts for giving you this problem.
