hi there i was just wondering if anyone could help, i wanted to make a collaboration of clips from one of my films and i put it on my hard drive with dvdfab decrypter and made it an mpeg with VOB2MPG but when i try to import it to movie maker and i get this message

"The file C:\Documents and Settings\titanic\VTS_01.mpg cannot be imported because the codec required to play the file is not installed on your computer. If you have already tried to download and install the codec, close and restart Windows Movie Maker, and then try to import the file again."

i dont understand what it means or what to do about it if someone could help me that would be fantastic thanks in advance!!!

You need a mpeg2 / dvd decoder installed, https://www.videohelp.com/tools?toolsearch=mpeg2&s=6&orderby=Name&hits=50&convert=&dvda...+or+List+tools. It may work with some software dvd players also like PowerDVD, WinDVD.

But mpeg2 in windows movie maker doesn't work that well anyway, it crashes, hangs, etc. So I would recommend something else to edit mpeg2 like mpeg video wizard or if just cutting, joining use videoredo or dvd shrink in reauthoring mode.

    Welcome lawzfeehily

Its a cryptic sod at times .

Its going to take you a little to figure it out when comparing systems .

Movie maker here , has no problem with mpeg2 using the following stat's from mediainfo , with a note that I have sp2 , and your system specs dosent seem to include it ... which could be a major sticking point .

    General #0
    Complete name : C:\working\one.mpg
    Format : MPEG-2 Program
    Format/Family : MPEG-2
    File size : 190 MiB
    PlayTime : 8mn 46s
    Bit rate : 3026 Kbps

    Video #0
    Codec : MPEG-2 Video
    Codec profile : Main@Main
    Codec settings/Matri : Custom
    PlayTime : 8mn 46s
    Bit rate : 2760 Kbps
    Bit rate mode : CBR
    Width : 720 pixels
    Height : 576 pixels
    Aspect ratio : 4/3
    Frame rate : 25.000 fps
    Standard : PAL
    Chroma : 4:2:0
    Interlacement : Top Field First
    Bits/(Pixel*Frame) : 0.266

    Audio #0
    Codec : MPEG-1 Audio layer 2
    PlayTime : 8mn 46s
    Bit rate : 256 Kbps
    Bit rate mode : CBR
    Channel(s) : 2 channels
    Sampling rate : 48 KHz
    Resolution : 16 bits
    Video0 delay : -680ms

    ----

Pay close attention to what type of audio is included ... its not complaining about the video stream .

You'll find media info in the tools section ... install , and use it to display internal info of your mpeg files .

But as baldrick mentioned , it dosent take much to shove windows movie maker over the edge and crash it .

Save often is the key .

    ----

But , if you want to clip out unwanted sections , then you may want to check out mpeg streamclip .

If the dvd successfully opens in dvdshrink , enter reauthor mode , drag title from right pane to left pane ... above is an icon

Hit that ... new window ... upper is selected start point ... lower is selected end point of each section you wish to keep .

Beware that dvdshrink in this fashion creates a multiple title set output ... each section becomes an individual title , linked by very basic navigational commands ... in order of creation .

Pgcdemux = stripping video and audio from such files
Besweet = audio conversion ... should you persist with using windows movie maker .
