I have been searching through this forum and I have found a lot of information. I need help finding the right information.
I downloaded and Installed MPEG Streamclip to convert .avi to .mov. When I drop the .mov file into ffmpegx 0.0.9 it says Unrecognized in the from box. I thought that it recognized that file type, am I wrong? Can someone help me?
Also I am trying to add subtitles to burn to DVD. I don't care if they are selectable or not. Hard Subs would be fine.
thank you for your help and sorry for being a noob...

What are you trying to do? I mean, is your objective to convert avi into some non-.mov output? If so, is there a particular reason that you are converting to .mov?
Ffmpegx can accept most avi files and convert them directly. There's generally no need to convert to an intermediate format (which takes extra time and necessarily introduces degradation, too), so unless you have a compelling reason for doing so, just go directly to the final file type with ffmpegx.

When I drop the avi file into FFMPEGX it says Unrecognized in the from box and nothing shows in the video or audio boxes.
I was converting it to mov because I thought that it would be able to recognize that file type.
My main objective is to use the avi & subtitle srt files I have and find someway to burn them on to a dvd-r that I can play on my standalone dvd play.
I am sorry that I am not clear on this stuff. I just started recently trying to burn dvds and I am having a hard time finding what I need.MPEG Streamclip 1.8

Are you able to play that avi file in VLC? You can use it (and other players, too) to get info about the file. In this case, you'll want to know what codecs were used for the video and audio. From that, we might have a bit more to go on and help you from there.
And fyi, AVI is what is known as a "container" format -- it just defines a file structure, within which can live many, many different types of audio and video streams. Those video and audio streams could be encoded in a variety of ways, which is why we need information about the codecs. So, just calling a file "AVI" doesn't give much information, as it turns out.

I'm also trying to burn an AVI file that I can play with VLC. Will ffmpegx take the accompagning .srt file and add subtitiles? I didn't see anything obvious in the TOOLS section which would allow me specify a separate subtitle file. I'm trying to convert the file to a regular VIDEO_TS format.
Thanx for any information.

Well, as they say, RTFM ("read the friendly manual").
Example: http://ffmpegx.com/filters.html
Or: http://ffmpegx.com/dvd_sub.html
Google really is your friend.
Enjoy!

Thank you kindly, I'm well aware of the RTFM reference aid. Alas, as you can plainly see my efforts to secure said knowledge have been in vain:
You tried to access the address http://ffmpegx.com/filters.html, which is currently unavailable. Please make sure that the Web address (URL) is correctly spelled and punctuated, then try reloading the page.
Make sure your Internet connection is active and check whether other applications that rely on the same connection are working.
Check that the setup of any Internet security software is correct and does not interfere with ordinary Web browsing.
If you are behind a firewall on a Local Area Network and think this may be causing problems, talk to your systems administrator.
Try pressing Alt+F12 on your keyboard and disabling proxy servers, unless you know that you are required to use a proxy to connect to the Internet. Reload the page.

Must have been a transient error these past couple of days as I just managed to access the "how to".
Sugaface: If all you're trying to do is add subtitles as opposed to converting formats, as the How To states, under Filters, and assuming you can play the file with VLC (Real Audio nor QT works), specify the .SRT file where it says "Load Subs" and you're on your way. I was not able to change the position of the subtitle but was able to play with the font and size. You can preview your selection as stated by playing the file once you selected both your input/output, file/format as well as the subtitles until you get it to what you want.
If you're not including an AVI file but a VIDEO_TS one you can add the subs via the VOB Subs option.
Thanx TomLee
