I have some bootleg Rage Against the Machine concerts that I'd like to share, but partially (aka not the whole concert) for collector's exclusivity purposes. Thanks to this forum, I found a program to convert DVD to AVI perfectly to my needs (AutoGK) and I am very very very satisfied with it.

But my new goal is to cut out like 1/3 of the concert and give out the rest. I tried using VirtualDub and VDubMod, but they create files that are over 4 GB and cut themselves off at the size limit. I probably have to tweak the settings or something but I don't know how. Basically, all I want to do is open a 500 MB video, chop off 1/3 the show, and leave it as a roughly 367 MB video. What program under what settings will do this using a simple interface? (or with VDub settings)

In VDM, video>check" direct stream copy" >save as >new avi

Oh crap, the A/V sync is off when I open it in VDM. I think it has something to do with the "improper VBR audio encoding". The error message says I should decompress the entire audio stream to an uncompressed WAV and recompress it with a constant bitrate encoder.

What program(s) do I use for this? How?

In VDM, Streams, R click on the VBR audio file, select 'Full Processing', then save it as a WAV audio. Then if you want to re-encode it to MP3 CBR audio in VDM, you can add the Lame MP3 ACM codec, 'Add' the WAV audio back in and move it to the top of the list, then 'Delete' the VBR audio, then for compression, select Lame MP3 at the same specs as the VBR file, then click 'OK'.

Edit as wanted, then save the video as Direct Stream copy and the audio as 'Full Processing' and you are done.

There are other ways, but that's what works for me.

VBR encoding is just evil. Redwudz' advice is sound, but I've had one or two files that even that wouldn't fix. Never found a fix for those files. I strongly advise you for future encodes to use CBR MP3 audio. VBR audio barely saves any space and it just leads to tons of problems like you have already had.

I wanted to point out that it is possible to edit your DVD footage BEFORE converting to AVI with programs like VideoReDo and MPEGVCR. Both allow you to try before you buy. With both programs, what you should do is mark the starting and ending points of what you want to keep, save those to a clipboard and then join those clips together (if thare are more than one) and save the result. Don't use those editors to remove footage you want to throw away as that may result in audio sync issues.
