On my LG LDA-830 Divx DVD player....

Certain Divx files have problems fast forwarding on my player. They will only fastforward at 2x speed (if that). One of the files actually stopped playing 2h15min into the movie!!!! ARGH!!!!

What is wrong (with the file or player) and can it be fixed? Can the firmware for my model be upgraded? If so, how do I do it?

    Thanks

The file may have a problem with it's index. Or the file may have missing frames or breaks in the audio. Try running it through a program like AVIRecomp and see if that can fix it. Or you can just re-encode it with VirtualDub or similar. VirtualDub may also be able to find any errors in the video. That doesn't really sound like a problem with the player, unless it did with all files.

I have seen this behaviour in a couple of files, and when I investigated further found that the download had fail to complete properly and the files were missing sections. Open them in g-spot and confirm that you in fact have the whole file. If you don't then it is toast and there is nothing you can do about it.

How do you confirm that it's a whole file?
I can't find it in GSpot.
    Thanks.

In the box headed "Container" is the file-info

If the last line does-not read "File length correct" then you have a problem
    Don't worry.......we'll be alright...

Run Avi_Gain_Regular.bat on the file to reindex.

In some files it will also show Truncated and give the true length of the file.

Had this same problem with recently with some files and my Philips 5140.

There may be two problems with the files, they're mutally exclusive and it seems you may have both with this file.

    1) Unable to fast forward at more than 2x.

The file is truncated as gunslinger noted. If possible, find out the actual file size to determine if you have the full file.

After running it through g-spot as gunslinger said (checking if it is truncated), run it through DivFix and 'Rebuild Index'. If it's truncated at the end this should fix it.

Another quick way to determine if the file is short. Play it in Media Player Classic (NOT VLC as VLC will play just about anything) and if you see a running percentile figure before the file plays, it's short.

    2) The video stops prematurely.

Either the file is just short, missing the ending. Or there are errors in the file.

The errors will cause the video to momentarily freeze, but at least on my 5140 will resume after a few seconds.

Open the file in DivFix and 'Check Errors'. If there are errors you'll see a long list appear on the right. Try 'Strip Index', then 'Rebuild Index'. I've had this work for videos playing in MPC, but not sure about for a standalone player.

If there are errors, choose 'Save original file' and 'Cut out bad parts'. This will reindex the file, but there will be abrupt jumps where the had sections were cut. It may or may not be enough to be annoying.

Note: as DixFix states, "The Error checking is not perfect!", try copying the files and checking the copies. I just checked some files I know have errors and show up with no errors now. *SIGH*

    3) If these methods fail and you can't find the original file again, I suggest running it through virtualdub. Choose 'check for freezes' and reencode the file.

Sorry for the long first post, but hope this helps this great forum!!!

I have also found with truncated Divx/Xvid files that VLC often does not show a length, and doesn't seek properly, even though it will play.
