I recently reformatted my computer and set up a Raid 0 config under XP Pro with a new harddrive so I could have some more space for editing work. I filmed my most recent project using Mini DV, and now when I try to capture in Premiere, the audio distorts and cracks constantly and the timeline freezes for a second or so at a time.

This only happens while capturing (the final AVI is affected as well), however if I just play it through the computer off of the camera it plays fine.

I've never had this issue before. In terms of trouble-shooting, I've already:

    1) Tried uploading with a different camera
2)Uninstalled my soundcard and used numerous different drivers (Using an Audigy 2 ZS Gamer)
3)Set my CPU back to stock speeds
4)Tried Capturing in Windows Movie Maker
    5) Defragged my HardDrives

None of the above helped in any way. All six tapes are having the same issue (only 4 of the tapes are of the same brand), and the problem is not heard through camera playback.

I tried uploading and capturing at a friend's house and didn't have the problem there.

Could this be an issue with the Raid 0 set up? Something not writing to the disks correctly? My only other thought could be something to do with the firewire port (using the port built in to the mobo).

At this point I've pretty much pin-pointed that the problem lies solely with Capturing, I just don't know what's causing it.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated, thanks!

I'm assuming you are using IEEE-1394 for connection? Separate drive from OS right?

    Could be the RAID.
DV only needs ~28-30Mb/s sustained for capture. A single internal ADA-100 can handle ~ 120-240Mb/s sustained. RAID is not needed.

Several have reported problems here with SATA and consumer level motherboard RAID.

Try WinDV to a single drive as a test.

  3. Quite possible it is the RAID, are you sure the same drivers as were previously installed are in the current install? Same hard drives, or has one been added? HD are frequently a source of noise induced onto the sound card.

Only way to be sure would be to re-install on a single drive, and test.

If it worked before, all drivers and hardware are the same, and the only change is the RAID, then that points very strongly at that being the problem.

RAID is generally optimized for reading, NOT writing. Single drive should handle the throughput.

    Sorry for disappearing,

I'm using the IEEE-1394 slot on my mobo, and my OS is installed on the same drive, i.e., I'm running everything off the two drives in Raid 0. I know it's sketchy in terms of a drive failing and losing everything, but I didn't know it could have write issues.

I'm just about the hit the sack, but tomorrow I'll try to capture with WinDV and if all else fails, I'll reformat again and run the two hard drives separately.

    Thanks for the responses!

  5. Several stickies and guides here about Capturing.

Nearly every single one has close to the top of the list, Capture to a drive OTHER than the one the OS is stored on.

It could be the RAID. It could be the drive is fragmented and/or near full. It should be capturing smoothly. Like I said earlier, others using mother board RAID, especially SATA mother board RAID 0 have reported similar issues. It could be a SATA driver issue.

Search the forums for RAID + SATA. They usually have no problem capturing to a third drive. I've personally never seen this but all my RAID's have used separate hardware control cards and never on the OS drive.
