Hello, new here. I have a samsung dvd(region 1) and want to use the hack codes to make it region free. My only question is will it still work with an american tv. I'm still new to the whole PAL and NTSC. Thanks for the help.

    Hi andrewrockzyou,

    Welcome to the forums.

If you hack your Samsung to be region free, it'll still work with an American TV. Of course, try this at your own risk - neither I nor this site will be held accountable if it f*cks up.

The region codes on DVDs and DVD players are a way of controlling what's released where. Release a Region 1 DVD and it will only play on Region 1 players - the rest of the world may be able to buy it, but can't (in theory) play it.

PAL and NTSC are details on how the video and audio are made up - see the "What Is... DVD" link at the top-left of this page for "Technical Info for DVD-Video". You'll see it talks about picture sizes (resolutions), how many pictues (frames) per second etc.

So if I hack it will it still be ok to play on my tv? Or is there a chance it would not work?

    It should be OK.

I've never heard that hacking a DVD player screws it up. That said, I've never owned a Samsung DVD player so can't guarantee it won't screw it up. I've hacked a number of DVD players from different manufacturers and never had a problem.

Also, check out your model in the "DVD Hacks" link to the left - there might be some comments. If a hack exists, chances are it's there coz it doesn't screw the machine.

But, in the end, you need to be comfortable it'll be OK.
