My Philips and NEC burners have had problems with new Fuji 16x and Sony 16x (either burn errors or the drive doesn't recognize the disc, and firmware can't be upgraded for these). I see Maxell 16x on sale at Circuit City, but the ratings here suggest 2 out of 3 Maxell 16x types aren't too reliable. Any way to determine the media code before buying them?

nope .... not unless the shop will load one into a pc and show you the info

No. But one thing you can do is look for "Made In Japan" on the package. They're far superior to "Made In Taiwan" media
