i've been using my sony hdr-hc3 camcorder and noticed that after recording any footage, i'm unable to view the recorded material in any other camcorder (ie: 3ccd, ccd, etc...)!? Is this common? i had sent a wedding message to a buddy of mine and he called me up saying that nothing is on the tape, but when viewing on my hd camcorder i can view the recorded material?

  2. It will only play on other HDV camcorders. Is your friend's HDV or SD?

I'm not even sure it plays in other Sony HDV camcorders.

The HC-3 has a hardware downscaler. That means you could output to 720x480i DV format to a computer over IEEE-1394 (WinDV) to a DV-AVI file. Then you could store that in 20 min increments to a DVDR data disc or record back to a DV camcorder (WinDV) to a normal DV format tape.

This may all be possible with the HC-3 but I don't have one to test.

or, if you record in standard dv which is an option somewhere in the menus, iirc, then the tape should have normal minidv on it and be readable in other cams.

again, i say should as i don't have one to test with either.

    I thought we did.

You have recorded in HDV but your friends' camcorders are not HDV. Is that true?

NO others can't play a HDV tape if their camcorder isn't HDV format.
    2 workarounds explained above.
