    UPDATE: 12.29.06 - 11:48pm
    Last demo: 08.04.05

    - #41 - Laserdisc, "Showgirls" - sampler #1
    - #42 - Laserdisc, "Showgirls" - sampler #2

This year, I close off my usual articles with a few demo videos that
I captured and processed to DVD MPEG-2 format. They are already for
authoring to DVD media (case you want to review them on a TV set) and
    are in a video_ts folder.

So here are a couple of Restoration attempts from Laserdisc. I did not
really do much here. But, the mpeg encoder results do stand out, and
I definately can not get these results with any other software mpeg
    encoder to date.

I have more demo videos, but no resources to U/L them soon enough, and
    no time, either.

Never the less, my next video endeavor will be more focus on Laserdisc
Resteration technques and processes, which may include an on-going
documentary of the experiences. I am planning on a topic about this
area, and although I had already begun writing it, I put it off for the
time being until I have a few related items ironed out. For now,
I'm a little depressed that I could not release the article this year
for 2006. I'm almost tempted to just create the thread at least.

For now, you can D/L the TWO sample clips on the first page, here.

Thanks, and another great year of success.

  2. Hi-

I'm curious. How did you get it to author for DVD, as it doesn't output 29.97fps, as required for NTSC DVD. You have a pure 23.976fps Vob there. What authoring program allows you to author a non-compliant MPEG-2 video stream? And why didn't you apply pulldown?

Although I don't guess it matters much, don't the NTSC DVD specs require at least one audio track be either AC3 or WAV audio? Only PAL allows a single MP2 track. Like I said, I don't guess it matters much, as most NTSC DVD players (although by no means all) can play MP2 audio.

What lead you to choose a low bitrate quantisation matrix like AVAMAT7 (aka Auto-Q2)? I mean, I think it's cool that you are interested in using something besides the usual Standard Matrix, but this one is inferior to it, and it seems to me that if you were interested in showing off your work, you would have chosen a better one.

Since this project must have taken quite a bit of time, I'm curious why you chose what is generally considered to be a really bad movie on which to work your magic, especially since it's out in 2 separate R1 DVD versions. Is it because you were experimenting with improving laserdisc caps for DVD, and weren't much interested in what you were using as a source?

But, the mpeg encoder results do stand out, and
I definately can not get these results with any other software mpeg
    encoder to date.

What encoder produces these results, if I may be so bold as to ask? Or is the question answered elsewhere in the thread?
