    hey

im making compilation dvds of my bands live/studio footage, but im wanting to add chapters.

Whats the easiest program to use for this purpose?

If the same program could make an easy menu screen that would be a bonus too

    cheers

If the files are already dvd compliant , then you need to demux the streams .

    Vobedit for vob
Batchdemux for mpeg2 (audio extension may need renaming too m2a)

I prefer to use vdub to strip the audio out as wav , and use besweet to convert that to ac3 for dvd authoring .

    ---------------

    Dvdauthorgui

    As for chapter input :

It's just before halfway down in the guide the chapter bit .

    ----------------

    Menu's via the gimp .

Dvdauthorgui contains a funtion to convert jpegs of background menu's into m2v video stream , you specify the length required ... they need to match the chosen format you have chosen in the project .

    Pal at 720x576 , requires menu jpegs at 720x576 ... simple .

TDA2 is the easiest and the best for this, you need not extract any streams and you get automatically generated editable menu. The above suggested are just free.
