Hi there - first time poster, long time reader :)
Could someone tell me if there is a way of creating VCD's on my Mac (OSX) without Toast?
I do not have Toast (or any other burning software). Is it possible you use the built in burning s/w in OSX? Or is there some free/shareware out there to burn VCDs?
Thanks.

You definitely need Toast-like authoring software to burn a VCD on a Mac. VCDs use a different sector size than audio or data CDs, and you need a program that can burn the video data to these smaller sectors.
There are freeware apps that will author your VCD data properly, but only to an image file. If you have a burner thats Mac compatible, chances are it came with a version of Toast (Lite or Titanium) as a standard. That is of course if you bought it new. Otherwise, I'm sure a "friend" of yours is out there somewhere that can "show" you the way Toast will work for you. -
Well I have an Flat Panel iMac G4 800 with Superdrive, so it didn't come with Toast or anything else like that.
Doesn't Toast have a "phone home" thing which checks the registration details when you connect to the net? I thought this would stop me using a friends copy. -
Toast asks if you'd like to register your copy, but you can politely decline by clicking "No."

woah you have a superdrive? how come you aren't authoring super-compatible hi-res dvd's instead? vcd (especially using toast's horrible codec) just don't compare!
