    Hi all,

Is there any talk about blue ray DVD recorders with integrated VCR? Anyone using them? My thinking is that I want to convert VCR-C tapes to digital format, everyone here recommended Recording VCRs (instead of a PC process) and I want to convert to AVI to avoid the errors inserted during the output MPeg/MP4/Whatever compression ...

  3. This begs the question, what would make waiting for HD DVD recording give a better result transferring from VHS than "current" dvd recording techniques.

Well I bet that HD-DVD and Blu-Ray DVD recordable discs will handle regular D1 resolutions at very long running times.

    That's a big plus.

Right now a DVD Video hits max quality at about the 1 hour or 60 minute mark. After that you have to start lowering the bitrate from the max.

Imagine though a 15GB HD-DVD ... that would allow at least 3 solid hours of D1 resolution video at 8000kbps video with LPCM audio or 9000kbps video with MP2/AC-3 audio.

The benefit isn't so much the idea that "I can put more on a disc" but the fact that you can now MAX quality (for D1 resolutions) and get more than 1 hour which after all is somewhat limiting since most movies are 90 minutes to 120 minutes.

So that's one way to think of it.

Well lets hope the DRM protection doesn't kick in and prevent you from recording your shows. I'm still waiting to see what Chinese manufacturers have up thir sleeves since they can't be too happy with what is basically a USA strategem again (I don't think they ever liked the Regional encoding which is why pretty well every player or recorder that was Chinese manufactured that I've bought has a region bypass built in).....

Yeah I didn't know they were out yet.

It could be a year before we see(affordable) BD/HD-DVD recorders.
