As far as I know, it can make it region free.

If it's a single layer dvd rip it & burn it back to dvdr with any program you want and it will be region free.
If it's a dual layer dvd, rip it and run it through shrink leaving it set to all regions to be safe, shrink and burn back to dvdr.

Now seeing as they are region 2 dvd's from the U.K. odd's are pretty good they are PAL.
Will your standalone convert PAL to NTSC ? Try one and find out.
As far as on your pc goes, it will play them as a pc will play either format.

There are also many standalone players you can buy that are either already modded to be region free and convert PAL to NTSC or that you can hack with a simple code to make them region free.

There are also a number of programs that will allow you to play original diff. region disc's on your pc's drive that override the region setting on your drive and you can also reflash your drive with hacked firmware that removes the region coding of your pc's drive depending on what drive you have.

Yeah...i missed The Descent in the theaters and thought about buying the DVD from UK's Amazon.com...i see you can rip a Region 2 disc and make it a region free disc...but if its a PAL disc...not sure if my Panasonic XP30 player will play PAL discs
