Vivendi Universal, the world's biggest music group, has signed a deal to make its music catalogue available on a free legal downloads service.
Under the agreement, Spiralfrog will offer Universal's songs online in the US and Canada.

This is interesting and would seem to be a complete reversal of the industries approach. I will reserve that judgment though until this thing is outside of it's vaporware status. The internet is todays radio. Give the kids the ability to download inferior tracks for free(AKA audio cassette recordings from terrestrial radio) and they will go out and buy new artists albums.
