Windows media player 10 will burn wav but not mp3

I'm currently running WMP 10 with windows XP, and everything was working fine. All of a sudden, wmp 10 will no longer burn mp3's (data cd) to cd but it will take the same mp3 files and convert to wav and burn with no problem. I've tried updating wmp but it says I already have an updated version. I seem to remember everything working okay before I installed windows latest security update for service pack 2. Anyone else have this problem or better yet, a solution?

I never burn anything with WMP but also had strange propriatary behavior from it.
Only once I didn't used Windows Explorer to copy my MP3s straight to Creative MP3 player.
I tried to synchronise trough WMP10 and strangly it took time to transfer the songs to the player. After all I found it transcoded the MP3 files to its WMA format.
OTT but as much as strange - why?
