Please help me troubleshoot my SVCD burn. .

I encoded using an SVCD template with TMPGEnc. I then burned an SVCD with Nero5.5 However, none of my DVD's recognize this as an SVCD - says invalid media. One thing - I did burn it at 8x (I have a pretty fast machine with 450M of PC133 RAM). Could that have screwed it up???

Any other ideas how to troubleshoot. This is one of three CD's and my first try so I don't want to burn the others without some ideas first. .

Firstly always see that your standalone DVD player actually plays SVCD's. Many people think that all DVD Player will play SVCD's - this is not the case.

Next is the media you actually recorded your SVCD files on to. Have you successfully burnt for example a VCD on it before and played it in the same DVD player? If not, check the DVD compability list on this website, to see if your DVD Player will only play certain colour layered CD-R(W)'s.

Next is the burning software. Try to play the mpg file (located in the MPEG2 directory) on your PC mpeg2 (DVD) playing software via PC drive. If it plays well on your PC then yuo can be more or less reassured that Nero did what it was meant to.

Try these things first before troubleshooting other areas.

I should have mentioned that I am using my PC dvd player to try to play the svcd . . .have tried it with ati's dvd, windows media player, and powerdvd.

Windows media says "no combination of filters can be found to render the stream"

ATI DVD does not load it automatically but when I try to open the mpg, it says "cannot open file h:\mpeg2\avseq01.mpg

PowerDVD says: "a drive with unsupported format in drive H"

Did I do something wrong with the encode? I used the stand 480X480 SVCD template which comes with TMGEnc.

Because the file you are playing is mpeg2 you need to have the mpeg2 codecs installed. Normally when you install a DVD software player on your PC these codecs are installed, as DVD is in mpeg2 format. Normally what I said, should work - even in Windows Media Player. However if you installed WMP after your DVDPlayer this might be the cause - I don't know exactly. Can you play the TMPGEnc encoded mpeg2 stream on your hard drive?

Hmm. . i'll capture something in mp2 format and make sure I can play it. If not, I'll reinstall the ati software with the DVD - your right. . i might have installed wmf after. .

My DVD Can play an mp2 file. I wonder if the conversion with TMPEnc to mp2 with an mpg file format is what is screwing things up.

Any more ideas??

Try demuxing the files, then multiplex them again. Tmpgenc has had some problems creating compliant svcds. It worked for me. Will most likely work with Powerdvd and standalone players capable of playing svcds.

Also having problems with this route, Used Pinnacle Studio 7 to encode a second mpeg2. Used Nero 5.5 to burn file encoded by Pinnacle but have not tried the TMPGEnc encoded file yet. Tried both cd-r and cd-rw media. Neither my computer based dvd drive nor my cd drive recognize the disc......"unsupported".

However, both discs play without a hitch on my standalone dvd player (pioneer).

maybe u have a defective DVD player.


Install all your software, but this time, install the DVD player last.

Weazle - I'll try this . .. do I just take the mpeg file (mpeg2) and run it through demux and then multiplex it or do I do that from the original capture I made (a ripped DVD). . in otherwords I don't know much about demuxing and multiplexing. . .

Greg12 - My DVD player plays DVDs and other SVCDs fine so I don't think it's defective. I did reinstall the DVD software with no effect.

I haven't heard of another software DVD player that is designed to be able to play SVCD's. Powerdvd and others aren't although they may be able to play the individual mpegs off the computer or even off the disc but the filesystem structure isn't recognized I don't believe. I know the above prog does...dunno if this helps any

Also, the DVD player you are trying to play it on has a different laser and rotates the cd at much slower revolution then your dvd rom in your computer, therefore you need to burn the movie @ a maximum of 4X... Burning it any faster makes some StandAlone DVD players to not accept the media...
