"It's official: when the first HD-DVD players are released on March 28, there will be no movie titles available in the new high-def format for at least another three weeks, and far fewer than initially announced. Warner, the only studio that was planning on having HD-DVD movies to accompany the format's much ballyhooed debut, will now release just three initial HD-DVD titles -- and not until April 18."

That's not going to make me rush out and buy a HD-DVD player. The studio will now release just three initial HD-DVD titles on April 18: Clint Eastwood's Best Pic Oscar winner 'Million Dollar Baby,' the Tom Cruise starrer 'The Last Samurai' and the big-budget screen update of 'The Phantom of the Opera.' Each title will have a retail list price of $28.98.Regards,
Rob -
I saw a price of $1000 bucks for the player, I'll pass until they are in the $200 range or something eles supercedes it and is that price.
I might be waiting a while considering how long it took DVD players to get into that range.... oh well. -
You know what ? Thost movie release prices remind of the good old
days of when Laserdisc movies were these prices, back in the day.
So, this new technoledgy seems to be following the old foot-steps
of the Laserdisc ERA

I wish there was a way to short sell HD/BD.

..just a little something to add as OT..
I'm guessing that the next level after the disks technoligy have been
exhausted (to whatever extent) ..
.. that the next audio/video recording to, method would be the Chip.
Much like they already have now, on the flash drives today.
I have a 128mb and a 1gig chip stick. The chip itself is only half an
in in size. No HDD, just celicon / electroncs.
After that, I dont' know.. hologram; mind-meld, etc. I don't know.

Well don't they already have a pc hddvd burner available??? If so then if you have a hdtv capture card you could still utilize a hddvd player without commercial movies available. It would be nice to be able to author the .tp files without converting. That would really make it a lot quicker and neater. Even if you don't have a hdtv that would save hours of converting time and preserve the 5.1 audio if your show you recorded had it.

>> Well don't they already have a pc hddvd burner available???
Do you mean to say, pc hdd "chip" burner ?? or something else ??
I was going to add.. they have 1gig and 2gig sticks, but I heared they
are going to 10gigs already.
If blue-ray is 30gig, then it aought to be a sinch to make a 30gig
stick, and greater.. wouldn't you say ?
Anyways, Cheers,

No I mean one of the next gen disc formats has a pc burner available or will be very shortly. That way you could burn high def blanks on your own.Originally Posted by vhelpDonatello - The Shredder? Michelangelo - Maybe all that hardware is for making coleslaw?

No HD or BD erasable out at consumer level yet but I will certainly be considering those.Originally Posted by yoda313

This is an interesting topic, I just saw my first HD-DVD commercial today on USA. It was from Toshiba touting the greatness of the new format. My favorite part was the almost unviewable "fine print" at the bottom of the screen talking about compatability issues of all formats on their player. Made me laugh in general.

There's a sucker born evey minute.
Watching the way flash memory prices are dropping and capacity is increasing, I would expect all optical media (CD and DVD - hd or not) to be gone within 5 years. And Good Riddance. -
No HD-DVD sale here. Even if it wasn't backed by microsoft I still wouldn't buy it. I'm waiting for BD media to appear later this year.

Well Flash memory is the competing Panasonic technology but currently flash is very expensive and record times are short. HDD will supplement flash for now.Originally Posted by oldandinthe way

Look at consumer flash module prices. Apprx $60 per gig. and dropping weekly. In spite of Apple's attempts to corner the flash market to supply their iPod needs.
New production capacity is on the way.
The Panasonic Offering is at a point off of the curve. -

P2 needs parallel flash (SD technology) to get the data rate and total storage sufficient for video.
https://eww.pavc.panasonic.co.jp/pro-av/sales_o/p2/p2card/index.html
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Secure_Digital
http://www.sandisk.com/Products/Default.aspx?CatID=1063
P2 transfer rate = 640 Mb/s = 80 MB/s
SD card (standard 6x) = 900 KB/s = 0.9MB/s
SD card (v1.01: 66x) = 10 MB/s
SD card (v1.1: 133x) = 20 MB/s (future)
So internally the P2 card needs 8 parallel v1.01 SD cards or 4 v1.1(future) SD cards.
Sandisk v1.01 1 GB cards list ~ $80 so a 8MB P2 card has eight of these plus PC card adapter or ~$700. The rest would be Panasonic markup.
16GB P2 cards (2GB SD technology @$120) would build up to ~$1000 at today's prices. -

but I believe there are such drives out in Japan and very soon here

That's it. I want one.
But, prices won't be reasonable at the beginning. They are talking $1 per GB for single layer media. It needs to get down to at least DVD-R9 ($0.25/GB) or DVD-R5 ($0.10/GB) levels to be a practical altenative. -
But the time you'd save from not having to downconvert hdtv captures might make it worthwhile for some. Not me at the moment but it would be niceOriginally Posted by edDV

By the time BD media gets reasonable, we will have realtime hardware h.264 transcoders that will allow standard DVD bitrates and standard DVD media to be used for HD PVR.Originally Posted by yoda313
