Hi,
Sometimes I download movies that have a special video format. Some kind of 16/9 or 2/1 framed into a standard 4/3 format. My goal is to convert them to vob files and project them with a native 16/9 projector or watch them on my native 16/9 tv. I usually use Canopus Procoder for that. But I always end up with the original frame which is a true 16/9 inserted into a 4/3 frame. Them i have to zoom the frame and I obviously loose a lot of the resolution.
Any idea?
I don't mind using another software.
Thanks

Replace the word "Download" with maybe " Have" so it doesn't sound like you are using downloading Warez. Maybe you are, maybe you aren't, it will simply eliminiate the possibility of someone thinking you are.
I'm no expert with aspect ratios or convertions but that is very common problem with this type of material. You simply don't know what the hell was done to them.
I get myself a DVD that I want to back up as cheap as possible and do a DVD back up. Then I know exactly what I have to work with. No downloaded anything, legal or otherwise. I find it a total waste of time an effort. No DVD can withstand the power of DVDShrink along with AnyDVD! -
Your encoder thinks you want a 4x3 image, so it's letterboxing the film accordingly. I'm not familiar with Canopus; is there no setting to tell it you want a 16x9 output?
If not, I suggest using TMPEnc, or some other encoder with multiple settings, and specify that you want the output to be 16x9. It will then give you an anamorphic picture which will play properly on 16x9 tvs, without zooming.
VSO Divx2Dvd also lets you specify a 16x9 output, but some players are finnicky with the resulting video. TMPEnc is pretty solid. -
Install FitCD and Avisynth on your PC. Use FitCD to generate an AVS script, then load this into procoder instead of the avi file. Make sure you set FitCD output to be Anamorphic, so it feeds true 16:9 through to procoder, then set procoder's output to be 16:9. Author as 16:9 as well and it should be fine.
Note : your AVI files are not 16:9 enhanced (or anamorphic, as it is sometime called). They are 1:1 PAR, which is why you are getting letterboxed output. The AVS script will resize the image to stretch it vertically to fit a 16:9 display (yes, vertically), you then encode and author as 16:9 so your playback equipment knows what it is dealing with.Read my blog here.

Edited due to misunderstanding:
If I understand correctly, your source-files are anamorphic within a 4:3 frame? If your source is mpeg2 or vob (dvd), you can directly adjust the appropiate headers with DVD Patcher. Make sure you use a copy, cause if I'm correct DVD Patcher will patch it's input directly.

You guys are great.
Thanks for all the tips.
I'll start fiddling with these asap.
