I have an avi with AC3 sound... when I use Xilisoft Video Converter to make a DVD (VOB) file with audio encoding set at AC3... it makes the file.. but the audio is half speed... video is normal speed. So you get low pitch slow sound.. and not in synch.. what am i doing wrong?

You're making the usual mistake: Believing marketing bull, and using oneclickwonder application.
Usual procedure for AVI with AC3 audio to:
    • 1) Extract AC3 from AVI with VirtualDub
      2) Run the AC3 thru ac3fix
      3) Encode AVI video only to DVD specs m2v (many options available here)
      4) Author AC3 + m2v to DVD (many options available here)

Yeah you are right.. about believing the marketing bull. I got the Xilisoft primarily to do VIDEO to ipod and found DVD as an option.. thought I'd give it a shot.

I will try your steps soon.. and provide my experience.

    Thank you.

I tried using TMPGEnc DVD Author for this.. however it does not import the .AC3 file. Returns error

    *Illegal audio format.

    Illegal audio format.
For a standard DVD you can only use the following audio formats:

Dolby Digital (AC-3), MPEG-1 Audio Layer-2, or Linear PCM.

I am confused as the error says you need AC-3 file... I am providing the same.. still doesn't accept.

I did run my AC3 file through AC3Fix / no problem.

Hmm... That's strange! Have you run ac3fix on the demuxed AC3 stream? Are you sure it's AC3?
    Tried any other authoring app?

Do you have the AC3 plugin for TDA (is this required for straight authoring with AC3 audio ?) ?

    Is it AAC audio ?
    Read my blog here.

No, the AC3 plugin is only necessary for converting other audio formats to AC3 in TDA. If you already have an AC3, TDA without plugin should accept it as a valid audio source.

  8. If your AC3 audio is 2.0 then open the AVI audio in ffmpegGUI and convert audio again to a new AC3 file. Use this new AC3 file to author with video ES in TDA. Should solve your problem.

I just ran the ac3 file (created using VirtualDubMod) through AC3fix command line program. For some reason the AC3Fix windows GUI tool, didn't work for me. When I clicked on Process, nothing happened.

Although there were no bad frames reported by AC3Fix, the output file from it seems to be completely legal for TDA.

I will recreate the DVD with AC3 sound and see how it goes. Will keep reporting until I accomplish final mission. (yes for newbies, THIS can be big..lol)

One question though, When I load the M2V and AC3 in TDA, I don't hear the sound... (a) how do I hear the sound... need to install anything special? and (b) will it burn with AC3?

Well, ac3fix is as simple a command line app there is, so a GUI for it is almost silly, IMO.
Obviously, ac3fix settled something in the AC3 TDA didn't like - probably just some header info or something. For your questions:

    A) I don't think you can.
    B) Yes.

We'll all be waiting for your progress reports - we've all been (or still are) in your shoes!

    It worked wonderfully well.

Made the DVD using TDA with seperate files for Video and Audio (AC3). Although I could not hear the audio when doing chapter cut edits in TDA, the final DVD came out with sparkling good results.

    Thanks for everyone's help!
