Try Taiyo Yuden DVD-R discs.
That is the best you can buy and should work A-OK.
For DVD-RW I have been using Maxell 2x DVD-RW without issues.
You keep buying crap media that is your problem.
Memorex is crap.
Maxell is crap unless it says MADE IN JAPAN but my guess is that your 100 pack of Maxell is MADE IN TAIWAN and that is crap.
For DVD-R try Maxell MADE IN JAPAN or Taiyo Yuden (which is MADE IN JAPAN). For DVD-RW the MADE IN TAIWAN Maxell DVD-RW seem to be OK. I'm not aware of any MADE IN JAPAN DVD-RW discs.
Taiyo Yuden DVD-R is fairly cheap at RIMA.COM

P.S.
Let me explain further in case the above is confusing.
1.) For DVD-R media the MADE IN JAPAN stuff is "the best"
2.) For DVD-RW you are pretty much stuck with MADE IN TAIWAN stuff but so far, for me, the Maxell DVD-RW stuff is fine."The eyes are the first thing that you have to destroy ... because they have seen too many bad things" - Lucio Fulci

Strange the European version has a 160 GB drive. The version for Asia and Australia described below has the 80 GB drive.

I have a pioneer 531h and have had no problem with tyg02 and sony dvd-r 8x
-
I have a 531 and I have used old TDK 2X with no issues (high speed dub is a pain at 2x) and Maxell 8X DVD-R with only 1 disk out of about 30 being a coaster.
I previously had a Panasonic ES20 that had severe problems with these two brands I had and would make discs that could not be played on other units. -
yeah but.... what pisses me off
In about 1 year or not even 5 months... i would have burned what...(20 dvd)
for a 300$ unit
because i was playing cat & mouse finding & waiting for the shipping to arrive in CANADA.
It's a bit frustrating to see that theres no firmware or something to fix this problem.....
I won't start to find the specific media each time it's kinda Freaky......
How often did i went to the store find JVC (vhs) because my VHS only took jvc..... never... -
I happen to agree with you. With VHS I could buy tape at any store and it would work in any VCR I happened to own ( five at the moment, Sharp(2), Sony , Panasonic(2)). VHS has certain advantages. The tape comes in a protected cassette. Even if the tape breaks or gets damaged, it can be spliced back together with a razor blade and splicing tape.
The disadvantages are substantial too. Resolution limted to about 240 TV lines. Copies result in a generation loss. They take up a lot of room. Navigating by fast forward/back is slow and imprecise. Still frames are not still. Top grade media is more expensive than top grade DVD media.
DVD by comparison is exposed media, easy to scratch; and if scratched to the point it cannot be read, difficult to recover. They come in many flavors, dvd-r/rw, dvd+r/rw, dvd-ram, and now dual and double layer. There are people faking top quality media. There is media that burns fine but has poor compatibility with other players.
DVD's advantages are that they are small, high resolution compared to VHS and TV, easy to navigate quickly, still frames are still without the tearing or vertical sync bars showing up, a theoretically long life without any degradation, no generation loss in copies, they can be edited on the computer, and they are inexpensive. Top grade media online is about 30-40 cents a disk.
I may have been lucky that I started burning dvd's on a computer to store data first. The Sony computer had a Toshiba dvd writer. The Toshiba would not accept just any dvd media. It was picky. Do not become discouraged, DVD is just different. -
The Pioneer site states:
"This recorder will play and record DVD-R/RW discs that use DVD-Video format (Video mode), and DVD-RW discs that use the Video Recording (VR) format. It is compatible with DVD-RW Ver. 1.1 and Ver. 1.1 / 2x, and DVD-R Ver. 2.0 and Ver. 2.0 / 4x. CD-R/RW compatibility.
This recorder will play CD-R and CD-RW discs recorded in CD Audio or Video CD format, or as a CD-ROM containing MP3, WMA or JPEG files."
So would this mean you could only record on up to 4X DVD-R/-RW media?
Sounds like trash time!!! -
That is incorrect. The note below comes from a reviewer test of the 530H.
This is true of the 531H also.
