What makes a vhs image degrade? Does it degrade over TIME? Does it degrade after each VIEWING? Maybe it's due to both??

Both will afect your vhs tape, also nearness to a magnetic field(speakersbing one of the worst)

There are a number of factors that will affect VHS tape recordings, including;
- Number of plays. The more the tape is played the faster it will degrade.
- Quality of tape media
- Storage conditions (temperture, humidity, and magnetic fields)
- Design and condition of tape player
