The discs are all standard purple dye on bottom. The color is only the print/label on top of the disc.

I'm on my 3rd 30 pack of the FUJI MADE IN JAPAN DVD-R discs from STAPLES and have had no problem burning them even though they have those multi-colored tops. I've gone through the first 2 packs and I'm on my 3rd from the 3rd pack.

However I do so hate the BLUE discs ... hard to read the BLACK Sharpie text I write on them.

I was at BEST BUY on Saturday and couldn't find a single 100 pack of the FUJI discs that said MADE IN JAPAN. I've yet to see a 100 pack that says MADE IN JAPAN. At least for the DVD-R variety.

Now I see this week the 50 packs of FUJI are on sale at BEST BUY so I'll have to go back and check through those although I did just buy a 30 pack at STAPLES for just under $10.00

Try a Metallic Silver Sharpie, 2pk at Staples for less than $2. Writes nicely on the blue ones, much easier to read.

Yes but I am "anal" and use the "optical disc safe" Sharpie ... does that come in Silver as well?

Not sure. If you want, you can take comfort in the fact that I've labeled all of my Fuji Blue's this way and they all scan fine. Below is a scan of one of the first ones I burned. I've switched to the 1693s for burning TYG02s (slightly better scans) but the disc below is a standard scan for the Pio 108. No difference between unmarked, black Sharpie, and silver as far as I can tell.

I wouldn't use the silver marker on a CD, but there is really no way a marker is going to eat through the top layer of plastic on a DVD. Also, the silver is slightly brighter than the picture shows below... but it's not that far off.

I believe the silver is safe, i think the carton says the same as the black sharpie

or get a pack of the cd/dvd markers with different colors..Got some metalic colored memorex markers at big lots for like 2 dollars...the silver/gold shows up nicely on the blue colored discs...

    Red isn't half bad either

In the case of Fuji, you can also check to see if it is a bubble-spindle or not (at least if it's a 100 pk., not sure about the others).
Stopped into a Best Buy yesterday, and they only had the 50-pack Japan-made Fujis in +R. I don't have as much use for +R, but at that price I bought it anyway. Maybe another location will have the -Rs.

Another distinguisher in the packaging seems to be that the Made in Japan 50-packs have vertical ridges around the bottom of the spindle, rather than being smooth. (At least the +Rs have this.)

    This week, they also have 16X Verbatims @ $10. for a 25-spindle.

I consider the YUDEN00T002 DVD+R 8x burn better than the TYG02 anyway. The DVD+R can even do 12x on some burners, and work wonderfully.

I just purchased the FuJi's (50 +R's 8x speed) @ Best Buy for $17.00 These are made in Japan and code as TY's 02's...I love them. The 100 packs of FuJi's both the - and + both say made in Taiwan. I use Ty's from Supermedia, and FuJi's and Sony's (made in Japan) from Best Buy and usually get my verbs from Best Buy. Haven't had an issue with any of these media types and they burn flawlessly.
