  1. I have Quicktime Pro 6 on Windows but no registered Quicktime on Mac. (I used to have a Pro QT 5 on Mac but that's useless today since I have OS X 10.4 on my solitary Mac!) I have some DivX 5 AVI files that I want to give to Mac users (and don't want to have to talk people through installing VLC etc. lol) I want to be able to convert the AVI's with MP3 audio into a MOV file of some type. I would like the video re-encoded to some standard QT format (Sorenson anyone?) and the audio converted to a standard Mac format like PureVoice etc. What is the best way to accomplish this? I'd prefer freeware - I've seen one-step apps to do this but they are upwards of $70 and that isn't worth it for this project.

If you have 3ivX installed then quicktime should be able to open the avi. You can then export it to a quicktime mov using whatever codecs you have installed.

  3. 3ivx isn't free, correct? Some people seem to say it is but others say it isn't.

It is free, sort of. As far as I know the quicktime decoder plugin has no limitations.

there seem to be no limits on the video 3ivx encoder codec , but there is a 30 day limit on the audio 3ivx codec which pops up to remind you of that fact ...
