I got a $9 Reward Check from Staples in mail today. Might go back tomorrow and buy a couple more 30 packs. Can't have too many at that price.

I'm burning a green top one right now ... DVD-R MIJ Taiyo Yuden.

So far it's burning fine ... doing the verify thing in DVD Decrypter then I'll run it through the Nero CD-Speed thingamajig and post the results.

BTW even though these are 8x DVD-R discs I am burning at 4x ... I found my computer doesn't like burning at 8x despite it being a Pioneer DVD burner in a P4 540 3.2E Ghz computer with WinXP Home SP2 and 512MB DDR RAM.

I do have one of those "odd" Pioneer OEM only DVD burners ... I forget the exact model number now but it is basically just like the 108 as I recall but with only 10x CD-R burning (instead of 16x) and it only appeared in some computers ... was never available on the "open" market ala the 108 which is the OEM of the A08 etc.

I just made a backup to a green dvd-r Ty-G02 with DVD Decrypter.
The burner is NEC3500AG. Nero cd-DVD speed test showed it is a nice burn!

Here are the scans of the Green top DVD-R disc I burned (see my post above).

This is a MADE IN JAPAN TYG02 Taiyo Yuden DVD-R disc.

    Looks good to me!

Remember this was burned at 4x using a Pioneer DVD burner and DVD Decrypter.

Bought three more of the 30 packs. Too good of a deal. Makes 5 total. Not as many as some of you, but a lot for me. 150 disks should last me a while.

  9. does anybody know where these made in japan fuji cdrs are coming from? I thought fuji went with prodisc a few years back. The only place to get made in japan fujis was best buy and they were just selling their old stock. I picked up 4 of these 100 spindles at staples and they are made in japan. Is fuji using ty again? Are these old discs with new lables on them? I still use cdrs for music trading and I prefer to buy ty's but unbranded discs just dont look good to me, hopefully fuji went back to ty's.

  11. Picked up another four spindles of the Japan -Rs with the 12% off coupon today. Burned ten of the "green ones" today and 45 "blue ones" yesterday, perfect DVDSpeed curves and scans. Greens burned on a Pioneer 106 and the blues on a Pio 108.

  13. I don't understand why Japan doesn't want to produce media anymore? I usually buy Maxell or Fuji made in Japan. Just picked up 3 50 packs from Office Depot this past week. Everything is moving to Taiwan! Why? I wouldn't mind so much, if they only kept using the same manufacturing process and the better DYE for the discs!

Anyone ever come across good Tawian discs?

btw...Nero doesn't show C1/C2 errors unless your drive supports it. You want to run Nero's "Disc Quality" test, in Nero CD/DVD Speed program. If the tab for Disc Quality isn't there, then upgrade to latest version.

C1/C2 error counts are what you need to look for on the discs. Not Nero's scandisc with so-called good/bad sectors. All discs will have some C1 errors. But usually they are a lot lower on TY media than others.

    Good Taiwan discs? Sure...
    Prodisc, MCC, TDK, Ricoh, Sony.

Those tend to be fine. And they are using the same dye/processes as they were elsewhere.

Who says Japan isn't producing media? Heck TDK even makes its own media in Japan, it just doesn't make its way to these shores. Hitachi Maxell still makes its own media in Japan but more and more what is being sold here under the Maxell brand is made by Ritek in Taiwan. I have no idea why Maxell USA is supplying Ritek discs. Or why Fuji is relying more on Prodisc and Ritek for its discs. Taiyo Yuden certainly isn't having any problems manufacturing discs for OEM orders...

I see Best Buy has 25 pack of Fuji for $9.99. I won't bother since my local BB never has MIJ disks, with one execption.....the 10 pack jewel
case Fuji. All others, including Verbatim and Sony, are made in Taiwan.
My local Wally World used to carry Maxells MIJ, but even those are getting more difficult to find.

  17. Seems to me that most Japanese manufacturers are changing over their plants for Dual Layer DVD+R/-R or BluRay/HDDVD. The money isn't so much in single layer +/- anymore. Why not get ready for the new money makers? That's my guess anyway.

The Fuji 50 packs for $39.99 are a mix of MIJ and MIT and sometimes they go on sale for $19.99 which is a good deal. Been a while though now since they have done that. You can tell which is which by the base. The TY base (or cakebox) is identical to how they come from RIMA whereas the MIT have a totally different cakebox, again easy to see looking at the base.

But unless on sale for $19.99 the $39.99 regular price is much too high considering a 50 pack at RIMA.COM is only $22.00 and even with shipping that is way less than $39.99

Also the new 10 packs of FUJI (in slim cases) I have seen have all been MIT and the last time I needed a few DVD-R discs and didn't have time to mail-order I bought the 10-pack of Panasonic which was Taiyo Yuden. This was at BEST BUY again.

    P.S.
I am talking about DVD-R discs here just to be clear.

Thanks for your recommendations. What name-brand uses Prodisc, MCC and Ricoh? I just want decent discs with good dye, that will be good for archival purposes. At least something that lasts for a few years. I've had some issues with some Memorex (CMC) discs. A few discs have degraded, and have some unreadable sectors. They were good when first burned two years ago. Discs that only last 1-5 years are a joke, especially since manufacturers guarantee the discs should last much longer. I should send my degraded discs back to Memorex. Maybe it's time someone take a stance against manufacturers and their so-called claims of disc longevitiy. No one wants to lose their data, especially if it's irreplacable like digital photos, etc.
