  1. I am trying to convert a tv programme recorded using eyetv into an avi file for archiving.

Problem is there is no sound for the eyetv mpg through ffmpegx, even when 'play' is clicked and the original file is played there is no sound. (When played in eyetv (and VLC) the programme has sound.)

From the ffmpegx window these are the settings –

    From: MPG
    Video: mpeg-2, 720x576, 15000kbps, 25 fps
    Audio: mp2, 48000Hz, 64kbps

    Quick Preset: AVI XviD
Video: mencoder xvid, 640x352, 1265kbps, 25fps, no crop
    Audio: mp3, 48000Hz, 128kbps

I have tried changing the audio tracks around (from 0 to 9) to no avail.

Here is the info from the (soundless) encoding:

Please help – all I want to do is to turn some recorded mpgs from eyetv into avi's for archiving! And please try to keep it as simple as possible – I don't know too much about this stuff. Thank you!

  2. You may try MPEG Streamclip to extract the audio.

When you export the show with eyetv, are you using the MPEG Program Stream format? That's what I'm doing, and when I drop the resulting file into ffmpegx the sound is included. I'm using the eyetv 500 btw.

Also, I just found out in my own testing that using mencoder doesn't allow for audio. I used the "XviD [.AVI] (ffmpeg)" from the Video Codec menu in the Video tab, and the resulting video had sound. So try using ffmpeg. (It looks like you were using mencoder). I used the same HDTV mpeg2 program stream output that came from eyetv both times.

And while I'm here writing, I also found that using "deinterlace" in the filters tab helped video quality, as well as "high quality", "two pass encoding", and "trellis quantization" under the options tab. I'm still testing and don't really know what all these things are, so this might not be *the* best option setup, who knows.
