    hi all,
i need to capture some vhs tapes so i can burn them to dvd. i am currently using a LG 6 head vcr/dvd combo to play the video, using a thing called AverMedia DVD ezmaker to attach the vhs/dvd to the computer via usb, using ulead videostudio 7 se dvd to capture the video and then ulead movie factory 2 se to convert the capture to dvd.

i did one capture before, with a couple of modified settings, but while the capture looked ok on the computer, when played on a tv there was some flickering, and when slowed down everything was flashing green then going back to normal.

i really need this to be good quality so if someone can give me tips or some help with the settings, that mould be much appreciated!!

  2. Quite possiible that the problem is the Macrovision copy protection on the original tape. You will need to remove it before passing the signal on to the dvd recording function. Do a search through the forums on macrovision.
Unfortunately, the cheap solutions don't always work that well and the expensive solutions are, well, expensive. Nyah Levi

That definitely sounds like MV, if your going by the preview window it doesn't always show up there. You can watch it just not record it. Load your capture file into a media player and I'm sure you'll see that the green frames have magically appeared.

A quick solution that will probably work is one of the Sima products for enhancing video. Older tapes have errors in them which the capture cards/devices will see as MV. The sima units help correct those errors.

A TBC is another solution but are quite expensive. They do more than prevent false MV detection though.

If you have an ATI card they have MV protection built into the drivers. Most cards dont have MV protection tho. If you have an ATI Google for ATI Macrovision patch, it worked great for me.

And unless it's a new patch that I'm unaware of it won't work on the new cards.

I posted a topic about this very thing @ Doom9 a while back and reboot responded:

Me--> "I was told that the big manufactures may write Macrovision protection into their capture drivers..."

He responded --> "You've been totally misled.
Get a Hauppauge PVR-250/350/500 and you'll never look at those other cards again."

I can tell you for sure that my KWorld card did not have MV protection, even tho it was a peice of crap .

reboot or anyone can you clarify about which cards MV?

we are going to try a different setup:
    a tbc - http://www.datavideo.us/products/tbc_1000_main_page.htm

    through to -
    http://www.canopus.us/US/products/ADVC300/pm_advc300.asp

so we will see how that goes!!

  10. FWIW my Leadtek Winfast TV2000 capture card completely ignores all forms of MV. I can capture directly from my DVD player playing a commercial DVD with no problem, ditto from heavily MV "protected" VHS tapes. The card cost < $50 about 18 months ago, so that might be a cheaper solution than a TBC.

That said, you can buy a good workmanlike TBC that will do a perfectly acceptable job for about $180, the AVT 8710. It might not be quite as good as a Datavideo TBC1000, but it's very nearly as good as quite a bit cheaper. Plus, if you're doing any kind of serious video capture work, you really ought to have a full-frame TBC on hand.

Some of them, on some drivers, will ignore it some of the time. It's not 100% foolproof. For that, you need a TBC.

True but that doesn't perform nearly as well as the other cards. I know I have one and many others.
