    I know it relys on settings and what not but in general, how long does each step take to back up a DVD.
    My computer specs are 3.2GHz P4 with 1MB cache 800MHz FBS, 1GB Dual Channel 400MHz RAM, 60GB HD, Win2K Pro w/ hyperthreading turned OFF

    Rip time with DVDDecryptor (newest version and ripping ALL files): 30-45 Min
    Shrinking: Varies widely so dont bother answering
    Burning with Nero 6.0: 25-35 Min

    Do these times seem long to anyone considering my computer specs? Or are they just about right? I'm just trying to get a general feel for how my comp is handling these things. I know that it varies greatly on settings and stuff, once again just looking for a general idea.

    Rip times seems longer. For me using latest DVD Decrypter (all files), it takes just over 15 minutes for a DVD9, and under 5 minutes for a DVD5.

    I guess it depends on your DVD drive for ripping.

    I agree with waheed - seems very long. I have a 1.75 Athlon with 1 gig ram running W2K Pro. My rip times are around 10-15 mins depending on the size of the DVD. Burning with Decrypter takes less than 10 mins. burning at 8x and less than 15 burning at 4x. These times are while I am still running other applications. Check to make sure you have DMA enabled for your drives. Check your running processes to make sure you don't have something hogging the CPU.

    Whats DMA?? And I forgot to mention Decryptor runs at 2.4x while burning goes at 4x, so they say. Maybe thats as fast as my drive goes. I know its a 4x burner. But the ripping might be faster. Does Decryptor rip at the max speed by default? meaning will it know what my drives max speed is and rip at that speed automatically or do I have to make it do that.

    Burners are often locked at ~2X read speed. Look for a firmware upgrade to unlock it or just add a DVD ROM drive.

    DMA-PIO

    Check Control Panel > System > Hardware > Device Manager > IDE controllers, then the channel your DVD burner is on. See if it's PIO or DMA mode. PIO is slow compared to DMA. My HD is UDMA 6; DVD ROM and burner is UDMA 2.

    For burning:

    4X = ~15min
    8X = ~8min

    I have a dvd-rw and a dvd-rom. I ALWAYS rip with the dvd-rom and usually get around 12x speed rips.
    Each drive is on a seperate IDE channel and my hard drive is a SATA. I could get used to this setup.

    In the device managers my Drive is in its own catagory, not IDE controlers. It is under DVD/CD-ROM Drives. Didnt see anything regarding DMA or PIO

  8. Your drive, believe it or not, is connected to your IDE controller. It is the IDE controller that can be set for DMA or PIO mode. Just do as redwudz suggested and check your IDE channel properties.

    Don't need to unlock the drive as its a BURNER
    I wouldn't unlock rip speed on the BURNER less its a firmware from the manufacturere of the drive

    Your times are totally in line..
    Where the INTEL p4 beats all those other systems
    is in the efficiency of the shrink operation.
    Here your uncomparabale times are usually speedier than the others.

    NERO is the only process running and it is only using ~50% of my CPU. Think thats why my burning time is twice that of what you guys are mentioning??

    EDIT: I'm not sure how to tell which channel my drive is on, however, I did check both channels of my IDE controllers. The primary channel said its current mode: Ultra DMA Mode. The Secondary channel: PIO mode. How do I tell which one is my DVD Drive. Everything else looked the same except for the mode. I didnt get too close a look though b/c I'm in a rush. Let me know and I'll check when I get back from class.
