I have a new NEC DVD double layer burner. I took a movie I had and backed it up on a Verbatim DVD+R DL disc. It was an exact copy, no compression. I used Nero DVD rom burner(latest version) useing the copy DVD method. I chose 2X writeing speed and I also chose to stop on any read errors, to make sure the disk was read fully and correctly. I also put the bitsetting, or the booktype setting, on DVD-ROM. Everything else as far as settings in Nero go are stock. When I made the burned disk the buffer looked fine....I didn't see any buffer under run errors. The problem is when I watch the movie there are graphic glitches and it even skips some chapters when I watch it on my DVD player.
Where does the problem lay? Is it the burner, software, or the media, or something else?
Thanks,
-Dman

I recommend trying DVD Decrypter for any DVD backups. I've used it for multiple DVD9 1:1 backups and I haven't had any problems. I usually make an .ISO of the DVD to my hard drive and then burn using Decrypter. Works perfectly.
I have the same NEC DL burner and use those Verbatim media as well. Maybe someone who uses Nero will have some better help, if you're intent on keep using Nero
By the way, I'm not sure you can simply just copy a DVD. At least, from everything I've read and from all of my experiences, I've always had to use some sort of decrypting program to copy the DVD. This is referring to retail or original DVDs...a backup from an original obviously can be backed up using the simply Copy Disc method. -
DMan:
I, too, would suggest that you not to try to make Nero work for dual layer burning, at least yet.
Early on, those who tried with Nero reported numerous problems with the layer change. Nero wanted to put the layer break at a certain point, and yet it also allowed the user to customize this, and some people ended up with "illegal" layer breaks (meaning they were located in an impossible spot); others actually ended up with TWO layer changes since it can keep the layer change from tthe original, depending on how it was ripped (very bad); users reported all sorts of problems. Including the types you described (frequent chapter skipping, jumping from place to place, freezing, etc.)
I know Nero just released new versions which supposedly improved the way it deals with layer changes on dual layers. But, I have yet to read a single report from anyone who has tried Nero since the upgrade. It may or may not be "better" than it was.
So, what DOES work? The reply above is correct. I have used this same method 20 times, so far, with terrific results. I have tested all 20 backups by watching them throughout. I also tested them on several standalone players (I have 6 DVD players in my family).
INSTRUCTIONS: Use only the LATEST version of DVDDecrypter. This is important. Nothing else running in the background, no "AnyDVD," or anything else. Just DVDDecrypter. And, it needs to be the latest version. Even the one from last September will not work.
Start up DVDDecrypter. Set it to "ISO READ" mode, and rip the entire original DVD to your hard drive.
Then, set it to "ISO WRITE," and go find the file with the "MDS" extension on your hard drive, and click on "BURN."
Done.
This yields a perfect backup, with the layer break in its original spot.
Any other methods, and you are experimenting and pioneering.
By the way, you are using the best dual layer media (Verbatim), from all accounts. And, your writer sounds fine.
Hope this helps,

I have used Nero Ultra 6 (latest version) for dual layer and not had a problem. I have not tried any other version of Nero since I just recently got my dual layer burned and have always kept up with the latest version of Nero.
I agree that even if you are not going to compress, you need to run the DVD through DVD Decrypter first. I also process it through DVD Shrink at 100% (no compression) and burn the resulting files. Maybe that's simply over kill and the DVD Decrypter in ISO and burn is a much faster way to do it. -
Sounds good.... does DVD Decryptor have a bitsetting or a booktype setting to make it DVD-ROM? I don't think my firmware has it and I need to manually set that setting in the burning software so my DVD player will read it.

Did you try watching the movie on your PC? I too have had similar problems with playback, one of which plays fine in my PC but both my standalone players will not play it (Philips DVR70 dvd recorder and Samsung DVDS 224), another one will play the first layer on the Samsung, but blocky after layer change, and sont play at all in the philips.!?....So player compatibility seems an issue also? -
Bo, I only have one DVD player and I can't play DVD's on my computer because I don't want to install the Windows updates to get the proper plug ins.
I forgot to mention....I am also useing DVD42Free, would that have anything to do with my problem?
Thanks,

UPDATE:
I used DVD Decrypter and my DVD's play perfectly now! It tottally fixed the problem. Shame on Ahead software for releaseing a product(Nero Rom Burner) with so many faults, even if it works on some systems it should work on all systems. That's what they get for nameing thier product after a ruthless evil ruler. Maybe they should release an updated version of thier software that actually works and rename it to Hitler or Stalin. -
I used the DVD Decrypter and it plays well in Pioneer dvd players even the old models which are picky. However, my Philips 727K won't play any DL discs.

Note that Nero has released a bug fix for DVD+R DL write problems on some cases. Latest version is 6.6.012 released April 14, 2005.
