PX-716SA Problems

I have a PX-716SA, which I had purchased several weeks ago, and subsequently had to send back to Ohio to get a replacement drive

I am using a Silicon Image SiI 3112 SATARaid Controller (SYBA, SD-SATA150R, with latest firmware and drivers) with WinXP SP1, and recommended and non-recommend media.

Also, the PX-716SA is updated with the most recent firmware, 1.06.

When I burn with the drive, I am unable to pass through the verification process, wither it be via Nero's verifcation (afterburning) or MD5 checksums. It seems either the data isn't correctly being burnt or the it isn't correctly being read... Also for some reason files that are less than 1mb will verify.

I have been talking with Plextor Tech Support via the phone, they have exhausted all possibilities except replacing the controller card.

I wanted to get people's input before I do anything else. I pretty much have three options left:

1. Do suggestions from the replies of this topic
2. Arguing and spending more money sending my controller to SYBA (and if it still doesn't work have to argue with NewEgg.com)
3. Return everything to Newegg.com and look for a differnt burner.

Does any one have simiar problems?, dose any one have any suggestions?

I would suggest you check out the PLEXTOR FORUM at CDFREAKS.COM because there is a specific thread on the 716SA drive concerning problems with SATA controllers and motherboards.

I have heard many optical drives do not play well with IDE PCI controller cards, I wonder if the issue is the same with SATA PCI cards.

If your motherboard has SATA ports, try connecting the drive to one of those. SATA and optical drives are still a relatively new combo, and thus may have some teething problems.

Other popular/good drives available at newegg: BenQ1620, NEC3520, and the Pioneer 109.

Thanks ... Checked out club.cdfreaks.com...seems like other people have been having problems with the PX-716SA...

Decided to cut my losses.

I will check out the NEC3520, Pioneer 109 or the BenQ1620.

Hi.

I'd highly recommend the BenQ1620: I have two of them, and they perform extremely well for me.

They have bitsetting out of the box, burn -R/+R equally well, and with MCSE, you can rip pressed DL discs @ 16x.

I was gonna get one of these, good thing I found this post. I too have the SiL SATA controller but it is integrated with my Mobo.

Have you tried different media or buring at slower speeds?

Not really, I just used Dupsonic (DVD-R 4x)(non-recommended media), and Sony (DVD+R, 4x)(recommended media)... With nero/plextools (Dupsonic) I couldn't select anything other than 4x, but Sony it had options from 2-8x. I tried burning from 4-8x with no success. The Sony's where like $2/disc and I had a ton of Dupsonic, I didn't want to keep throwing money at the drive. I had some **iffy** success with a 2001 software driver for the SiI 3112.

I wouldn't knock Plextor, I am thinking about maybe getting the IDE version of this drive, I am going to looking around these forums more vigilant... As some posters on CDfreaks.com pointed out it might be early for SATA and Optical drives.
