Media Code

I have been doing some research on trying to get the best quality DVD media to backup my family pictures. I have a few questions:

1. Should I buy media made in Japan only?

2. I have ran into these codes TTG01, TYG03, TYG02, MXLRG03, MXL, TY, CMC MAG E01, CMC, RG03, RG02, MIJ, TTG02, G01, G02, etc.

Is there a reference out there, that explains these codes? Also which codes are the good ones and which ones should I avoid?

If you enter each media code and do a search of each in the 'DVD Media' list on the left menu on your screen, you'll get peoples' reviews on each of these media codes, with detailed accounts of how the media has worked for them.

There's NOTHING wrong with made in Taiwan media, almost all of my media is made in Taiwan, although I've got alot of Taiyo Yuden (TY) media, which is made in Japan. That said, if you can find media made in Japan it'll almost certainly be very good media. But some of the best media I've used was made in Taiwan, so as I said there's nothing necessarily wrong with Taiwanese media, it'll just vary. RICOHJPNR01 is great media, and I've never had any problems with CMC media, both of which are made in Taiwan.

The two main types of media from Japan are TY and MXL media, both excellent media.

Not a media code, simply an acronym for Made in Japan. Some will refer to a disc being MIT - Made in Taiwan. I was never really into "+" media until very recently when I started to bitset it to DVD-ROM with excellent results. I have found these media codes to be the best in the DVD+R format:

Maxell..002 (Maxell brand, I don't know of any others that actually use this code, unless fakes)
MCC.....03
RICOHJPNR02
TDK.....02 (TDK brand, I don't know of any others that actually use this code, unless fakes)
YUDEN000T02 (lots of Taiyo Yuden fakes to beware of)
