ok so here's the deal. my friend needs an extra hdd for the computer that just got put in his truck. it only came with 40gigs so to add another it needs to be firewire or usb 2.0.

    2 very important factors.

    1. it's in a truck and will be used to play mp3's and videos for the main stereo so it really needs to be shock resistant if there is such a thing for external hdd's. just from peoples experiences what seems to be the most durable hdd.

    2. the truck is here in phoenix az. sooo, it kinda needs a really good cooling. specially for those summer months

im open to all suggestions. is there any pre built external hdd's that would work well for what im looking for. or is it better to piece one together myself?

    thanks

piece one together by using bytecc aluminum firewire external enclosure.

bytecc has enclosures that have fans but the cases are not aluminum. i purchased one of them that said it was aluminum but it's plastic. the plastic cases say they are shock resistant but i would think cooling would be a bigger factor since you live in AZ. the link i posted for you is one i purchased last week at a local pc shop which has a 200 gb maxtor housed in it. no problems with it but again it's not in a car.

i was also looking at the 2.5" external. aren't those hdd's more shock resistant due to the fact they are designed for a laptop? or am i mistaken?

these should work pretty good. i would think. the fujitsu drive says 900G shock resistant. and that case should keep things pretty cool. what do u think?
