  1. Ok please everyone that reads this and knows about this leave a reply I need help badly. I will leave every detail possible. I bought a NexStar 2 DVD burner to burn DVD-R's with my laptop. I bought two different brands of DVD-R's, Imation DVD-R 8x and TDK DVD-R 8x. Now with all this set i converted my avi to mpg with TMPGEnc. I burned with TDA. On my Xbox and portable DVD player the DVD-R's worked but on my other two they didn't. Yet when i researched it said they are supposed to be able to play them. Here's the link to the DVD players info pages on videohelp.com.

About the only thing I can suggest is to try some different brands of media. If the ones you have burned so far play OK on two of your players, but not the others, it's either the media or the players.

The fact that your X-box and portable player can play the disks you burned means that there is notihng wrong with your burning process. Some dvd players, plain and simple, just don't like some media brands. I've resolved the problem by using a different brand.
The Pioneer player didn't like Imation....wouldn't play it at all, while Maxell 8x (yellow tops made in Japan), played with distortion. These played fine in Sony and Panasonic players.

  5. Is there by chance a brand of DVD-R's that plays on every DVD player, or most?

There are tons of info on this web site that would help you...e.g. when I got my first burner a few months back, I researched here and found out from people who have similiar burner/DVD player and the types of discs they use and what works and what don't and I must say, this is much easier than trying out every type of discs and hope that they will work on your particular burner/player, so far I bought two brands of DVD-R (8X Maxell and Verbatim), 1 brand of DVD+R (8X Sony) and 1 brand of DVD+RW (4X Maxell) and they are all good with my burner and DVD player.

Most people will tell you that the very best brand of DVD-R you can buy is those made by Tayo-Yuden (sp?). You'll also see these referred to as TY
or T-Y. Even these are not guaranteed to play on all players. Players more than a few years old seem to have the most compatibilty problems.
