Greetings, Searched the forum and learned encoding can take a long time. I am attempting to improve my DVD burning time, skills,(I hope)& qualty. My usual practice is capture with AIW 9700 Pro using Lord Smurf settings.( no problems). I then remove the commercials using Womble MPEG Wizard. In Womble I use the automatic settings to create a MPEG2 for DVD. The automatic setting is suggested by Womble since recoding decrease video quality.... I then import the MPEGs to DVDit. DVDit states the MPEG have to be encoded.I author the DVD without problem. When it comes to burning the DVD, DVDIT takes a long time to transcode and burn the DVD, approx. 1 hour per MPEG file, plus building menus etc. I did select to in DVDIT to Transcode forgood video quality. One DVD takes approx 5 hours. Is this normal? I can improve the time,,but have good video quality?![]()
Also, I can only fit 4 Mpeg files on one DVD,(4.7gig). Is it possible to fit more MPEGS?( I am attempting to use the cheaper 4.7 disc for TV show stuff, hate to use Dual Layer)
Computer States: Asus P4C 800 mob,2.4P4 HT CPU,1gig Ram, 9700 pro ATI, AIW, Master drive 100gig 7600, slave drives, D:160 gig for digital photos,E:250 gig Sata, digital video,F:250 gig Sata, digital video,DVD Pioneer DVR A08, Dual Layer.

Only encode your AVI video to DVD compliant mpeg once for optimal quality. Do not reencode the video when authoring, select the appropiate settings the first time.
The correct way is to capture to AVI>Edit>Encode>Author Using first encode.
How much video you can fit on a DVD depends on the bitrate. Adjust it accordingly. Use the calculator to determine the correct bitrate for the amount of video.... https://www.videohelp.com/calc.htm Be aware that lower bitrates produce lower quality video.
For average encode times see this thread. https://www.videohelp.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=251737 -
Thanks for the help.I will check what seetings I need in DVDIT to import without recoding. If I capture AVI, MPEG WIzard does not support AVI editing. Any suggestions on a stable AVI editor.

I was assuming you were capping in AVI... Mpeg is fine but for the best results you need software that will only renecode the parts you edit... not sure if your software does that. But to that you also have to match your capture settings too which can become a headache if your trying to fit a certain amount on a single DVD.
Anyhow for rookies I always suggest Ulead Video Studio 8, whatever you use the less converting you do the better.Either
AVI>edit>MPEG
or
MPEG>edit>encode with the same serttings as capture with software that doesn't reencode parts not edited.
for best results.
Crystal clear right? -
Thanks for the help. I think I am getting it. I downloaded TmpgencPlus and encoded the MPEG file I edited in Womble. I used the settings from Lord Smurf Site. Encoded like a champ. I imported to DVDIT without problem and was able to create a DVD in acceptable time. I will look into Ulead Studio Eight for editing AVI. Thanks again for helping me get better results.
