  1. Hey!

During the 2003/04 Stanley Cup playoffs I captured a bunch of the games with my ATI AIW, or maybe back then it was the TV Wonder pro.. Yeah that was it, I've since replaced it with an AIW 9600 XT.

Regardless I captured the games using Hugh Quality Mpeg2 DVD Quality anticipating putting them onto a disc for later use. Most of the games turned out to be a few gigs and I have yet to do anything with them. However one, I must have used the high qulity for this one, turned out to be 13 GB. It's about four hors long (overtime and stuff).

My problem is, when I use TMPG to convert it, the output file is really shakey and makes me feel ill just watching it lol. I barely compressed it only about 3%. but it looks horrible (the 3% was done to make it fit on 1 disc). Right now I'm trying it with 0 compression (the output will be 4.6 GB's).

I'll update pending that result, but think it will be the same.

    Thanks.

PS, I use pretty muchthe default seting in TMPG.

You ruined the captures by using ATI MMC defaults. No surprise. Probably IVTC'd and/or deinterlaced. Probably a great big mess for source. Should have used some guides.

Same goes for TMPG settings. There really are no "default settings". You've got to learn what they mean.

Your outcome is no surprise, given what I've read so far.

Read the guides. Read the guides. Read the guides.
    Cannot say that enough.

This sounds simply like a field order problem. Change the source field order option in Tmpgenc.

If you captured to mpeg2 what are you converting to? But it is likely a field order, especially if the shakey stuff happens when there is movement on screen.

  5. So using mmc was a problem? Bad source? Why? It looks fantastic before doing any encoding.

I'll look into the field order settings, but have no idea what that means, lol, time to browse more.

Ummm, not sure what I captured it in, it was in april/may. But I'm converting it into MPEG-1 Layer II whoops, that's what I meant before.

    Thanks for the responses.

What the field order is all about is that if you captured as interlaced, meaning a frame is not a still image of a single instant, but the even lines are at zero time, while the odd ones are at zero time+- 1/60s for NTSC. So when you do that there is an order according to which the even and odd lines are displayed, and if you change the original field order you end up with a video that looks like crap. So in short you can either look for your card documentation and see if it says which field order it uses, or you have to extrapolate that from the output. I would suggest reading about this stuff on the left

No, ATI MMC is excellent software. Their default settings are trash. You have to make your own. Follow guides: www.digitalFAQ.com
