  1. i didnt mind the safe zone, i thought it would be fine, and some of my titles are cut off. so i gotta re-render and do it all again. My free dvd-r that came w/ my burner was a 8X TDK and i have a TDK burner that says it burns 8X at 12X speed. This was my first DVD but it burned FAST, maybe 10minutes or so. nice!

so everything worked except the safe zone stuff, AND during transitions and when the camera was panning fast at some points it got very pixelated, or slowed down, skipped, etc. brand new DVD-r, clean tray on the DVD-player (is my player just outdated and slow?)

can i change settings to fix this problem? i'm using pinnacle studio 9 and my dvd player is about 2-3 years old.

can't wait to get my 100dvd-r spindle coming in the mail.

Not bad at all You'll get a feel for overscan/safe zone with time. Nice that your first one wasn't a coaster

Stand alone DVD players all work at the same speed (give or take a little), as described in the DVD spec. I may be wrong, but the way I read your post, you are converting a downloaded AVI file to DVD (otherwise the safezone shoud not be an issue).

Transitions (especially fades to black) and fast movement can suffer during mpeg compression if the bitrate is too low. What dod you use to encode, and did you use CBR or VBR ?

The other thing to check is if your DVD player can read -r disks, and if it has a problem with certain brands. The quickest way to check this is to look up your player in the list here https://www.videohelp.com/dvdplayers

  4. my dvd-r came from captured DV which yes, made it into .avi files. So i've gone back and put all my titles in the "safe zone", but now i feel on my preview screen like they're all practically in the middle of the damn image or video!

Apprently my DVD player is just pretty bad w/ discs. i stuck the DVD-r in my dad's computer and it played w/ no problems, even all of the titles that were cut off on the TV showed up just fine. I'll have to pass it around to some more standalone DVD home players this week and see how it does.

What is CBR or VBR? i chose 7000 kbits/sec which reduced the quality to around 90% so i could fit about 1hr 2min on the disc. If i reduce it down to 5000 i can fit another 86min, how low can i go before i start to notice a difference? im using Pinnacle Studio 9 and i went back to my movie options and never saw anything for CBR or VBR.
