  1. I hope I am in the right forum. When I first used VirtualDub it would work with my AVI files. Now I get an error message "Needs Video for Windows codec to decompress". It will not open dvsd format.

I am not sure what happened. It sound like MS has taken over AVI or I have lost a codec.

How can I get the codec or restore the ability of my capture program to file in standard AVI?

    Thank you.

  2. hmm

i think the the "dvds" avi format is DV files right ?

so, generally virtualdub or any other avi only type
prog won't be able to read a bigass DV file...unless
you get a DV codec, like the panasonic or canopus
    ones

i use the panasonic one, works fine for me

you can find them here: http://www.student.oulu.fi/%7Emiohtama/dv-editing-tips.html#DV%20codecs

make sure you follow the instructions, especially
if you use abobe premiere...the panasonic codec
causes it to crash if its in yer registry =]

if the files you are trying to open aren't DV...then i dunno
    what the problem is =]

  3. I assume dvds is a M$ DVI format. I store in DV so the files are huge. I had no problems at first. I have a Canopus 100 which connects with firewire and is recognized as a digital camera or VCR. I think the problems started when Windows asked me what program to use it with. At first I said none but then I selected Windows Media Player. It now always captures in Windows AVI rather than standard AVI. I do not think it is a matter of size.

Does this help? Any other thoughts?

  4. hmm

are you actually using media player to capture shit ?

if you're using a dv capture prog, it should be saving proper DV files

in regedit have a look under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Drivers32

look for an entry called vidc.dvds
