"Apple, which has annual sales of about $5.7 billion, owns less than 3% of the desktop computing market but has indicated that supplying music to customers may be its future."

Apple has apparently been in discussions "for months" with Vivendi about this purchase. According to http://www.macosrumors.com, the new Apple music service, should it ever see the light of day, will be integrated into Panther itself (rather than iTunes, as previously rumored).
If this works out to be true, this must mean that Apple Computing Inc has come to some agreement with the Beatles over the use of Apple in a music venture, which is prohibited in their previous agreement(s) with Apple Corps Ltd. That, or the new Apple music service with be called iUniversal.
