The SVCD format has a higher resolution, with higher bitrate, and the potential for VBR 2 (or more) pass encoding.
DVD resolution 720x480 bitrate up to 9000 (2hrs per DVD)*
SVCD resolution 480x480 bitrate up to 2500 (45-50 min per CD)*
CVD resolution 352x480 bitrate up to 2500 (55-60min per CD)*
VCD resolution 352x240 bitrate of 1150 (74 min on standard CD)*
*or so - also 80 min CDs can hold another 5-10minutes
The higher resolution helps give a sharper picture on SVCD as opposed to VCD, but the main difference is the bitrate. SVCD gives a smoother picture with less noise (done well).
We are talking about standard version here...once you get into XVCD or KVCDs ect things are not so clear cut. -
think of svcd and vcd as cars quality wise
SVCD is a dodge Viper
VCD is a old pickup truckIts always funny when it happens to someone else
