I am a newbie with some problems authoring Surround sound for my stand-alone and hope some of you experts can provide some insight.
I did my first successful Divx/AC3 to DVD, at least I think. What I did was:
1. Opened the Divx in NanDub and saved the sound by "Save wav"
2. I ran AC3fix on the sound file
3. Encoded the video in TmpgEnc
4. Authored the DVD in Maestro, Maestro reports the sound as AC3 6ch.
5. Compiled the project
6. Burned the DVD with Nero
My standalone DVD player does indicate that the sound is AC3 and everything works perfect except that my surround receiver (SONY STR-DE 485E) does not automatically recognize the sound as surround and plays the sound in only 2ch.
I can force it in to surround by something called "pro logic" but is that real surround sound? I guess not (I can do the same with a music cd, and those are NOT recorded with surround sound), I think "pro logic" is some artificial way of mimicking surround sound.
My surround receiver (SONY STR-DE 485E) accepts Dolby Digital and dts at least that what’s indicated on the front, so does it decode AC3? I guess not.
But, this I guess is the important question, what is dts and dolby digital. Can I encode sound from a Divx into the formats and author a DVD with these formats?
Some insight on these matters would be appreciated very much

Lars-Bo

AC3 is a different signal from DD and DTS. You will need to check that your amp has a built in demodulator to convert the sound.

...... Strange, I have been doing some more research and to my understanding a surround reciver with Dolby Digital should play AC3 6ch.
http://www.dolby.com/digital/diggenl.html
That is Dolby Digital and AC3 is the same thing

I am sorry but I am not 100% sure on how to help you with your query.
