  1. Hi there,

    1) I was just wondering is it possible to convert a dvd movie into svcd format and fit it onto one cd-r disk or can u only do it with two cd-r's?

    2) I know that there is such a thing as fiting a dvd movie onto a single
cd-r disk but I'm not sure what format that is - vcd?, anybody know?

    3) What programs do you use in order to fit it on one cd-r disk?

    4) Has anyone sucessfully converted a dvd movie onto one cd-r with menus, trailers, chapters etc... is that possible???

    Thanks.

  2. The search button still works.

    1. SVCD = 2 cds depending on length and quality

    2. VCD = depending on length, same for Divx

    3. On the left, look at the guides and tools sections

    4. Nope.

    2) If you want to fit a entire DVD movie onto one CD, then it's called a XVCD.

    XVCD:

XVCD stands for eXtendedVCD. XVCD has same features as VCD but it is possible to use higher bitrates to get higher video quality. XVCD is basicly everything that uses MPEG-1 video, except it is not within the VCD standard and is burnt in "VCD"-Mode.

    3) You could use programs such as TMPGEnc to encode the ripped DVD to XVCD. You could use VCDEasy to burn your XVCD.

    Hope That Helps!!! :P

  4. A dvd movie complete with menus is not a XVCD it would be a miniDVD..It is possible to fit the whole film ontoa 800mb CD but the quality would be awful. Youd have to split it into 2 discs. There r miniDVD guides here i do believe or check out my (rather old) guides at www.area450.com

  5. Vcd uses Mpeg 1 and SVCD/DVD use MPEG 2 which generally gives you better quality but requires more space. The standard formats have set bitrate paramters for audio and video. VCD supports simple menues and 2 channel audio. The others offer more options. When you start changing the standard settings there are a lot of different opinons as to what you have? But does it really matter you just want good quality all on one disc. In my experience "VCD" with a reduced bitrate gives you good quality on one disc. With "SVCD" you really have to drop the bitrate to get it on one disc and the quality really suffers. You can use VBR but it takes a lot longer to encode. I have put 2hr movies on one 80min CD-R and the quality is not crap - it is not DVD but much better than VHS!!!

I meant the DVD movie by itself without the menus.

Thats all I ever convert my movies to.....
xVCD....I put one movies on one 700mb CDR .....I still used two on films like:
    Lord of the Rings
    Pearl Harbor
    Bridge on the River Kwai

2:10 or 2:15 is about as much as I put on one disc, quality is good ...but I use VBR so it has higher bitrates when needed.

    Note: I've done a lot on MINI-DVD's
You can get thrirty to fourty minutes on the MINI-DVD
You'll have to use VBR at 3.5 or 4.0
If the MOVIE IS ONLY THAT LONG NO problem

MINI DVD rarely plays in a settop. I remember reading there were only 3 machines playing this format
However, A recent test in NERO using UDF mode on a CD
MADE MY PLAYER -NOT ONE OF THE THREE MODELS- BUT A pHILLIPS954
IT PLAYED THE MINI DVD--NOT AT THE RIGHT SPEED..BUT IT DIDN'T SAY NO DISC LIKE ALL MY PREVIOS BURNS done with iso or data mode

    Sorry for a late reply...
I have experimented with VCD, SVCD, xVCD, xSVCD, and tons of templates... Some would take two to three times the amount of processing time as my normal....and the quality difference was always hardly noticable (sometimes worse) So I always use my own xVCD template.

CVD goes the opposite direction from what I want....I don't like using more than one disc per movie.

Now I did edit some video for my boss....and it was about a minute and a half ...so I used a unlocked DVD template and jacked up the video bitrate....still only took up 45mb ....My One Disc per video rule still applied : )
