  1. Ok

VCD and music cd's are in minutes 74/80 minutes depending on disc size
SVCD is higher quality so less minutes per disc.

I see a lot or people put their divx files on disc due to hardrive space.
Now how is it possible if the divx (or xvid) are 730MB
    when a cd-r is 80 min/700MB

I have some divx files I want to save onto a disc.
    I'm thinking or building a divx machine. 1movie= 1 disc .

Like I stated the file sizes are in the 730MB range

    1. How can save this file?
    2. Can I do it with overburning ?
    3. Do I have use 90/99min discs or something?

    Thanks in advance

You may do it with overburning, but highly unlikely. It all depends on your media and your burner. 90 min CD-R will hold 750 MB data. In the perspective of your software and hardware, you will still be overburning, but the 90 min CD-R is "made for overburning".

  3. Thanks mats.hogberg,

    I thought I would need a 90 minute disc

None to buy around here though. Only online I think.

    Thanks again,

We are getting into the question; What is 1 MB? It is 1,000,000 (1000x1000) bytes to some software and 1,048,576 bytes (1024x1024)to others. So we are looking at 700,000,000 versus 734,003,200. This is how you get those 718 MB files onto 1 disk. The disk will actually hold 734,003,200 bytes, which is 700 MB in real MB's and 734 in Marketing/Advertising MB's (are we really confused yet?).

Back to the original question: A DivX machine. Remember, just because you can fit a movie onto one disk, doesn't mean you should. In order to fit a 2 hour movie onto 1 disk, you have to have lower resolution and higher bitrate, or high resolution and artifacts. You would have a lot better results using 2 disks, this lets you hit DVD quality and have AC3 sound.

What i am getting at is :
If "friend" wants to give another "friend " a disc .
and his file is already 730MB you have no choice but to have it on one disc.

Personally when I back up my movies I make svcds2-3 discs, but we are talking divx not svcds.

    Thanks again,

  6. hello. you can acually put an 800mb divx on a 700mb cdr if you burn the divx file in mode2 the same way you burn vcds and music. only thing about burning an avi in mode2 is it takes off a layer of protection in order to get that extra amount on disk and the avi container lack in its own error protection so some would say that the disk is more likely to be unreadable by the tiniest scratch. i have used mode2 and divx for a while now and have yet to run into any problems. just be careful with disks. here is a link to the mode2 program so you can make an iso file from your divx. http://www.radlix.com/~dxl/ read through it carefully you will need to install a filter that allows your drive to read the cd with the mode2 data on it. so if your gonna share your movie with a friend or family add the filter on the disk so they can install the filter on thier pc without having to go through abunch of crap trying to find it on the net. with this prog you are allowed to burn media files in mode2 and data files in mode1 on the same disk! peace

  7. Thanks hoola_loop,

Sounds risky I'll just stick to svcds. Besides svcd compatible with more of my friends players.
