I'm using SmartRipper to back up a DVD of mine. The movie is AMERICAN HISTORY X. Everything goes fine until it reaches 58%. It stops and gives me 3 options. Retry, Abort, or Ignore. It says to unlock the DVD by playing it, which I do, but that doesn't work. If you press ignore that doesn't solve the problem either.
Do you guys have any ideas?

Use DVDDecrypter in File mode to get a full backup. I've been using Smartripper for time and been ignoring comments on how good DVDDecrypter is. Until recently...
And try cleaning the DVD. It may have dirt. Or scratches. Does it?The more I learn, the more I come to realize how little it is I know. -
That sounds like a scratched disk, not an encryption issue.

I haven't even looked to see if the disc is damaged/dirty/scratched etc. SmartRipper has been working great for me, but if the dvd is not damaged I will try that other program I guess.
thanks for the comments guys -
ALWAYS clean and check discs before ripping. Especially rentals. ......... harrymj3

Harry how dare you! I would never burn an image of a rented dvd ... that would be illegal. Didn't I tell you I was making a "backup"?

Hi- I just made a backup of "American History X" using DVDDecrypter, and everything worked great. I just ripped it in file mode. Like Gazorgan said, It might just be a dirty/scratched disc. If cleaning the disc dosen't fix your problem, you might try Decrypter. GOOD LUCK!

I have now tried both Decypter and SmarRipper and both are not working. It happens with the same file. To check even further I just tried to right click the problematic file and save it to the harddrive without using a rippping program. Sure enough there was an error while trying to save it to the harddrive.
The weird thing is that the dvd has no visible scratches and it plays perfectly. I dunno ... I give up.

I've never tried this but reading your problem had this idea.
If you have the disc space copy the entire contents of the DVD onto your hard disc, then use the ripping software on the HD. -
Are you able to rip an ISO image of the DVD on disk? That might work. If it does, then it means you got a very clever DVD
What I would do then, would be to try every rip tool around (e.g. CladDVD). One of them might work. That's how things go with all these tools. Every nail needs it's own hammer. The more I learn, the more I come to realize how little it is I know. -
Try an other setting in the menu settings. Change "key check once" to "every vob file". This may solve the problem.
I had the same problems with some DVD´s. Breakdown after 70 % depends on the DVD.
After changing the settings everything works fine. -
I came to the conclusion that the dvd is damaged at a certain spot (somewhere in the middle) and cannot be copied. Like I said before all three methods I tried terminated at the same point, that is near the halfway mark. I'm pretty sure that if I had another copy of the movie it would copy just fine.

What type of dvd drive do you have, the reason I ask is because I was just reading a post eariler today about occasional problems with liteon dvd drives.

I have one of those CD-R/ CD-RW/ DVD drives. I know its not my drive though, its the dvd.
