  4. I thought my site opening was legitimate news to the community and since I am not selling anything do not consider it advertising...

If I am wrong hopefully a mod will let me know, I did not intend to break any rules...

In my honest opinion though to be considered advertising I would have to be selling something or making a profit off of it somehow... and neither is true.

P.S. could a mod now post and give us a ruling either way?

its up to the big boss .. you were not selling anything (at least on the front page) so i did not close the thread ...

but i thought it was a little bold to advertise a competing site, that does what this one does already, here.

not that there isnt room for a lot of like type sites and there are many good ones -- we let everyone know about them anyway...

.... if you build a good site - people will come.....

anyway -- good luck on your site ... i couldnt check it out as it had no public access.

  6. Well if the mods/admin don't have a problem with the post then I withdraw my above post and wish you all the best with your site.

  7. Thanks guys, I assure you there is no selling of anything anywhere in the site...

registration is not restricted what-so-ever, so all anyone has to do is register and look around..

About competing with this site though.. never...

My site (www.dvd-education.com) is specifically about DVD to DVDR, whereas this site covers so much more... I am just focusing on one area trying to get deeper than I have seen here..

    Thanks again guys

  10. The link in the e-mail I was sent gave me this message

    'Activation Key Not Found!

Your activation key was not found in our database.
Please try registering again by clicking the Register link at the top right hand corner.
If this problem persists, please contact the Administrator of the forums.'

I went back to register again, but it will not let me b/c the username has already been used.

  12. Any site that requires a registration merely to look around is a site I bypass now and forever...

  13. ya know, some sites require registration just to keep search engine bots from snooping to much because their content is so good...

    just a thought.

  15. how about you make it public access to read... I hate having to register and then ending up not liking the board.

  16. If I turned off registration, there are so many things that wouldnt work though.

    1) Private messages would have no name to send from/to
    2) The statistics panel would not have a name to list as being active
    3) If you make a post, you can always edit the post if you need to, but how does it know your allowed to edit the post? because it knows your name....
    4) so many more things...

Registration is not restricted, and is really necessary in my opinion for all the features of the site to be able to work correctly. With some additional coding I guess I could make the site read only, and take away all the features mentioned above if your not registered...but to be honest, I want to take a break on coding this site for awhile, lol

  17. I have changed the forum, so registration is not required, but only the public area can be accessed if your not registered and logged in...

  18. I was just asking for public read access. If you want to post, then we should register, but just for browsing around, i think it should no registration.

You are using PHPbb? you can change peoples permissions so that they can view threads but not reply until they are registered, at least it would give people a chance to look at the forum.

  23. I have had some help in researching this from one of my new members 'ManChild', and he has discovered that the solution here is one of two things...

    1) Solution: Make sure you are not blocking the HTTP_REFERER field. On various firewalls, especially from Symantec/Norton, this feature appears as the privacy settings. This has nothing to do with privacy and it's a standard HTTP protocol field. Please note that you don't have to disable the firewall, just enable the referer field."

    2) possibly more simple is to temporarily deactivate the firewall while registering and activating.
