  1. This week I bought a Yamakawa 218 DVD player for my parents. I have a Pioneer for myself.

This Yamakawa plays dvd/vcd/svcd/mp3/jpeg(slideshow)/mpeg1 files/mpeg2 files. It plays my movie backups made by Instant Copy. But it does not play the DVDs I made from Camcorder recordings.

The DVD-R media is not an issue for the player because I use the same media for movie backups.

    I tried DVDs
    1. Authored by Maestro, burnt by Nero.
    2. Authored and burnt by MyDVD.

Both didnt play on Yamakawa. Even tried the Nero UDF 1.02 mode. But play perfectly on Pioneer player.

I tried the following and it worked:

I gave the VIDEO_TS generated by Maestro as input to Instant Copy (simulating a rip) and the output as my Sony DRU500A. The DVD produced this way works in the player.

Anyone has any ideas why it does this? I just cant think that Maestro has any issue. May be Nero.

I can try one more thing to find out. I'll extract VIDEO_TS from the IC's PDI files and burn using NERO. If this plays on Yamakawa, then it has to be Maestro. Else, its Nero.

    You just answered yourself:

If you CAN burn correctly with InstantCopy, but can't burn correctly with Nero, and you're using VIDEO_TS files both authored in Maestro, then there's no way that Maestro could be the problem. Take a hard look at Nero (even though I've never had any problem that way).
Also, If you can burn correctly with IC, then why don't you do it that way for every burn?

  3. I have a hard time believing its DVDMaestro. Try using RecordNow Max to burn.

I was having a similar problem with DVDs I burned from DVD folder compiled by Maestro. I ended up using Maestro to make an image file then burned that to disc with the latest Nero. Supposedly there's a file Maestro puts in the VIDEO_TS folder that some players don't like. I haven't tried removing that and burning the folders but that was suggested also. Maybe using the DVD video burning format on Nero may help? The latest version of Nero is REQUIRED though, there were lots of compatability issues before, but almost all are cleared up now.

  6. Definitely delete the .lay file that DVDMaestro creates. It isn't a DVD standard file. Also I wouldn't use Nero to burn.

I have had the exact same issue, and now use Prassi Primo DVD to play.

The Maestro authored discs, will play the menu's etc, but as soon as you try to play the Video (title sequence) it'll lock.

I would for sure delete the .lay file, as the ones I've had issues with I did not know to do this when I made them, however, in Nero (using the newest version - 5.5.10.15a) , it removed it, as it was not a recognized file, however it still messed it up upon playback.

Those same discs, ripping them back down, and re-burning them with Prassi has worked fine.

It's either the inclusion (even though it isn't burned to the disc) of the .lay in the direcotory when you burn them in Nero that I believe messes them up. as previously stated above, and from first hand experience, the same files, simply re-burnt with, in my case, Prassi Primo DVD, work fine.

However, some of them I had on Princo's...........getting those extracted on 4 out of the 20 has been another story...........

I agree with spidey - delete the .LAY file from the Video TS folder prior to burning - it is simply a blank menu page put in the folder by default by SPRUCEUP.

I have produced several DVD-Video disks so far (with Scenarist and DVD2One) and recorded them with Nero (previously) and RecordNow DX (now). I also have a yamakawa 215.

Now, although your recorder is slightly different (has a front panel VF display where mine doesn't ), I would say their f/w and approach is the same. They play everything. They even play (or try to play) disks that I had recorded and no other player would play.

However, I have had severe problems with Nero 5.5.10.0. This version just won't write a DVD-player usable DVD. At least with a SONY recorder. Using 5.5.10.14~17 solves most of the problems with DVD player compatibility, but has problems with several newer media (especially 2x).

The SONY came with RecordNow. In the pamphlets that came with the drive you should find instructions on how to download a free upgrade to RecordNow DX. Do it and record with this. I've tried in my latest despair with Nero and sworn not to use Nero again. Not even for CDs.

In case you still suspect DVDMaestro, try playing the VIDEO_TS directory with a s/w player (e.g. PowerDVD). If it plays, the DVD authoring is fine.

    Yes,

SaSi mentioned a point I should've. On your hard drive before you burn it out whichever way you shoose, open up a software DVD player and browse to the video_ts.ifo file and open it, run through all your routings and movies and make sure they work before you make another coaster.

This way as he states, you can at least get things isolated to this point.

  11. I used to have the same problem, DVD's I authored myself would not play on my Sanyo player, but would play on everyone elses. But when I did a DVD to DVD backup of the same disc, the new one would play!
It drove me nuts for ages, but then i found the problem. When I did the disc to disc copy, it burned the whole of the DVD, even the blank part at the end, whereas my authored original sometimes only burned halfway across and my Sanyo didn't like it. Now if my compilation is under 3.5GB I add a couple of dummy vobs to take up the room, and they always play first time. Thought I'd share this incase there are any other players out there with this strange problem.

There IS an issue with "short" DVDs. Some DVD players won't play DVDs with less than 1 Gb. But not 3.5Gb. If your player won't play 3Gb content, then it's a strange one.

  13. I go above 3.5 GB to be safe, not sure what the limit is, but it does refuse to play anything I've done with only one movie on, and they are almost always over 1 GB.

But then it can't really be about the size, because as I said, the same disc will play if it's copied disc to disc. It just doesn't seem to like discs that are oly half burned.
